Mitsubishi G4M2 Model 22 Otsu (一式陸上攻撃機二二乙型)
The Mitsubishi G4M2 Model 22 Otsu is the last production version of the G4M2 Model 22 aircraft. A total of 49 of these planes were built and were put into service in November 1944.
History
In 1944, American air dominance was constantly growing, so the Japanese Navy began modifying the defensive armament of its bombers. For this purpose, the Mitsubishi G4M2 Model 22 and G4M2a Model 24 bombers first received the Ko (more information about G4M2 Model 22 Ko) modification into production, which meant installing the 20mm Type 99 Model 1 gun in the side windows (and adding radar, which helped avoid fighters). However, thanks to the increased production of the 20mm Type 99 Model 2 guns, a new upgrade was introduced in mid-1944. It was decided that a Type 99 Model 2 gun with better ballistic performance than Model 1 would be installed in the tail and top turret, improving the aircraft’s defensive capabilities. The 20mm Type 99 Model 2 gun used in G4M2 Model 22 Otsu bombers was a modified gun that was normally permanently mounted in fighters, but it didn’t have the classic pistol grip like the Type 99 Model 1. Therefore, it was only installed in the top and tail turrets. Modified to the Otsu version, the G4M2 Model 22 started reaching units in November 1944, and since the production of the G4M2 Model 22 was being phased out in favor of the better G4M2a Model 24 (more information about the G4M2a Model 24 and G4M2a Model 24 Otsu), only 49 G4M2 Model 22 Otsu were made, although older G4M2 Model 22s were probably modified to this variant. These bombers, in various forms (day bombers, night bombers, patrol or reconnaissance planes), served until the end of the war.

Construction description
The Mitsubishi G4M2 model 22 Otsu bomber is structurally identical to the G4M2 Model 22 Ko bomber. The only difference is the defensive armament used. The dorsal and tail turrets were equipped with a Type 99 model 2 20 mm cannon instead of the Type 99 model 1 cannon.
