Perhaps the original TWS when F-14A was first released would be great for situational awareness but I don’t think it’s unique to F-2.

Unfortunately, it’s definitely not as good as a meteor. I mean it is only a 2011 missile, it was very ahead for it’s time, but that does mean it’s not up to par with truly modern options.
Like, it had roll control, but given how the AAM-4’s guidance logic works i’m not sure it would actually benefit from BTT, and i don’t believe it had the 4B’s improved lofting stuff. It’s a bit slower then the base AAM-4 in terms of peak speed also. (Probably still about as fast as the AAM-4 is in game though). And it doesn’t have the AESA of the 4B, so it still has the downsides of the AAM-4’s regular seeker (poor track rate and vulnerability to rapid changes in direction of the target). Which, given it’s longer range, the datalink functionality wouldn’t be able to make up for as effectively.
IMO, it would best be added like how the pheonix was. Something niche to be introduced before it’s nearest equivelents, as it is substantially worse then them due to it’s nature of being first. But we all know from the F-2 gaijin doesn’t like giving things to japan first. -_-

I’m actually curious, are there any active F-2s using AAM-5 or is that purely just an ADTW thing too?
Not that I expect AAM-5 anytime soon, but it’s just, I wonder if AAM-5 is even an option or if it was just planned (maybe “planned” like the HMD too).

AAM-5 aren’t a serive weapon of the F-2 yet, and only used by ADTW aircraft so far.
But AAM-5 are compatible with the F-2, since they don’t need anything that the AAM-3 doesn’t already need. Even pre-MSIP F-15Js can use the AAM-5.

Yea, I’m aware, but was just curious.
Since F-15Js have 9Ms, not like AAM-5 for F-2 is out of the question, whenever it’s appropriate that is.
That being said, I think AAM-5 looks ugly on the F-2 and the AAM-3 is just too iconic for it.

I will say it again - just give the F-2 AAM-4B with improved notch, chaff and ground clutter resistance and its good enough to be 14.0.
Ofc it’s not just that irl, but the normal AAM-4 isn’t what it’s supposed to be anyway.
Or maybe Gaijin won’t add the F-2 anytime soon and we will have AIM-120D before the Viper Zero.

I agree, in that, just giving it the AAM-4B to give it something unique that others don’t and give it some competitive edge.
