Saw this news on discord but once again a U.S company is shooting the idea to upgrade the F-2 for Japan with radar and systems.

wouldn’t HMD potentially fall under “Radar upgrade” ?
Maybe, most likely would fall under avionics.

Overall I’d say the skin is good, but man do the pylons look good weird in simulator with the contrast of the black against the white.

I didn’t like the normal pylons, and grey seemed boring, but the black made a nice contrast-
But I can see how it’d look weird.

F-2 MLU is real!? dude!!! FOR THE LOVE OF GOD
so they say " improve its capabilities to F-35 level ".
is that mean AN/APG-83 + AN/ALQ-257 ?
but man how about it engine? any upgrade?

Heck, just add CFTs and you’ll get a bigger F-16E
Forget about the engine upgrade, current one is more than enough.
HMD is the most crucial aspect that F-2 lacks as in its current states.

Though it would help to have a superior engine to compensate for the heavier airframe, would make it truly the most peak falcon
i mean come on man, if F2 MLU (i now start to call this for cool name) have a good engine and can use some AMBER Rack or another rack and double amouth of missile will be cool!!
Man ıt uses Block-50 engine which produces insane amount of thrust already, I wouldn’t mind better engine but if have to choose between engine upgrade or HMD, I’m taking the second option.
I totally agree with you on that. HMD is basically the bare minimum standard for any modern fighter nowadays. I know the F-2 was primarily designed for anti-ship and CAS/support roles, but there is no way Japan skips the HMD for this MLU.
Why? Maybe because of their AAM-5. It’s a high off-boresight missile, and without an HMD, you literally can’t use it to its full potential in a dogfight. Plus, if Northrop is actually going to stuff a brand new APG-83 radar and ALQ-257 in there, the pilot is goig to need an HMD to effectively manage all that new situational awareness and target data. So yep, massive electronic upgrade means HMD is an absolute must!
