The goal of this topic would be to gather opinions regarding the addition of an existing mechanic to the surface to air missile carrying vehicles
As some of you may now, the developers have confirmed to be working on long range surface to air missiles. Additionaly, some fire and forget SAM already exist in game in the form of short ranged MANPADS.
The mechanic i would like to share with you today is the ability for a player to track its fire and forget missiles fired from a ground vehicle, which is currently impossible.
Example from an air vehicle :
-
Why implement such a mechanic ? Playing AA is currently a quite static activity, and having the ability to follow the missile would diversify it a bit and make it sligthly more engaging. The mechanic already exist, and would likely not take a lot of development time as well.
-
Why not on SACLOS missiles ? I feel like implementing it on SACLOS missile would be less interesting, as those require all the player’s attention in the usual first person view already.
-
Regarding the advantages it gives when it comes to situational awareness :
- One first potential problem would be the ability to spot ground vehicles using the third person view on the missile, although it would be very limited, since any surface to air missile is usually too fast to see anything. IIt would also be very dependent of the SAM position and the target heading. I therefore don’t believe it would be a reliable abuse.
- This would give the ability to verify that the missile lost lock on the target, which is quite strong. It is however important to keep in mind that aircraft can already do the same on their missiles aiming at ground targets. Having it the other way around could be considered symetrical balance.
