I thought so, which is why I clarified this was for air breathing
Can we make an educated guess how Gaijin would “obviously” low ball it to the ground? :D
Gaijin: 100km max range you say?
100km in 90s huh? Mach 3 top speed, 90s of battery life and 100km max range
absolutely slow and can’t pull in the first 12km huh? :D
and AAM-4s IRL ~20km arming distance
Non russian ramjet? 125cc bike level of aceleration
Wonder why is that, but 100% is a engeneering choice, right? Everything these days uses modern cpus/chips, so…
Shahed running on moped 50cc engine :D
Overall total specific impulse is overall reduced in cold temperatures. It’s not 1 to 1 between the burn time increase and the loss of thrust.
Also, at a lower trust it’s typically harder to reach higher speeds since you experience more total drag during the total burn time
That is true, but the difference in total impulse is usually fairly small (while he difference in thrust / burn time can be much greater). For example in this test data if you average the total impulse for -65°F and +160°F you get 21,065 and 21,660 respectively. So a temperature increase of 225°F (107°C) increases your average total impulse by 2.8%.
I didn’t mean it in a 1:1 ratio. How they change depends on multitude of things, but in general if it gets colder, thrust gets weaker while burn time increases.
i was taking another look at the this asgard paper that describes a missile very close in concept to the meteor and decided to attempt to recreate it in war thunder with the newly added ramjet propulsion used in the asm-3 and kh-31 family.
the paper described the missile had an isp of 650 at sea level, a maximum burn rate of 4.3%/s, which means the ramjet phase can last at minimum ~23.25s, the booster had an isp of 207, this low value is due to the nozzleless design of the booster, they’re around 10-20% less efficient than normal rocket motors, the burn time was 2.2s (given from the paper). the paper only had ratios for the booster and sustainer fuel masses, which were respectively 22% and 11% of the total missile mass, i assumed the missile had a total mass of 181kg, from those 40kg were for the booster and 20kg for the sustainer.
the paper had this graph to show the different effects that different turn down ratios have on the terminal speed and flight time of the missile when fired at a distance of 100km and altitude of 6000m and speed of mach 0.9 for both planes.
Spoiler

the tdr = 1.0 line is what i was aiming for to recreate in war thunder, it’s the situation where the missile will always be on full throttle. the most interesting points in this graph for me were the maximum speed (~mach 4.1), terminal speed (~mach 1.7) and flight time (~90s).
Spoiler

i was happy with this result so i moved on to getting closer to the meteor
Spoiler

the paper makes clear that the current missile doesn’t have the same boron loaded type of fuel that the meteor has, to make this change i only increased the sustainer fuel mass from 20kg to 24kg (20% increase in density) and increased the sustainer isp by 10% from what i had before.
this video below is a shot at 127.5km, the conditions were 10km altitude for both planes, 1100kph for the targeted plane and mach 1.3 for the firing plane, i put a r-77-1 to have something to compare it with. i used a cruise speed of 4100km/h and loft profile of the aim-120d, i also added a terminal time to hit of 20s, that means the missile will full throttle when it gets 20s away from the target. the objective was to get close to the 100km in 90s figure, since the conditions are unknown for that and i configured the missile based on something completely different than that figure alone, i think i had some freedom to choose the conditions i wanted.
for longer ranged shots i could change the loft profile and use a cruise altitude set to 25km, avoiding the missile from getting much higher than 30-25km with the aim-120d loft.
I suspect the disparity between Meteor and other missiles against maneuvering targets at long would be even more apparent.
for tail chase shots the difference should also be pretty big
I was thinking about that 120D’s loft is quite agressive, and Ramjets needs air to work in its full potential
yeah, for most shots you have in an average match it would be good enough, but for some extreme range shots it would surely creep above 30km and cause issues i think, at least in real life it would
There won’t be an MLU for meteor, from french documents :
The milestone for launching the MIDE RMV (Meteor MLU) implementation phase in 2026 was contingent upon contributions from international cooperation. Preparatory work having shown that this approach would not achieve the operational objective, that objective will instead be met through the imminent launch of Operation COMETE.
Yes, the Comet is a clean sheet design that will still utilize a ramjet sustainer.
No, it won’t use ramjet, comete is expected for 2030.
