MBDA SCALP-EG - The Death Angel’s Backbone

Hi and welcome to my 91st suggestion, which is about the SCALP-EG, hope you like it.

Basic Background

The APACHE AP missile was developed as part of a joint Franco-German project in 1983, known as the Arme Propulsée À CHarges Éjectables (APACHE) program. The goal was to create a long-range air-launched weapon for precision strikes against strategic targets. However, Germany withdrew from the program in 1988, leaving MBDA solely responsible for further development. The initial version, APACHE AP, was designed to carry 10 KRISS anti-runway submunitions and had a range of 140 km, making it highly effective against enemy airfields and infrastructure.
As the program evolved, the French Air Force opted for a variant with high-explosive (HE) and penetrating warheads instead of submunitions. This version, called the SCALP EG (Système de Croisière Autonome à Longue Portée – Emploi Général), retained the long-range precision capabilities of the original missile but was optimized for striking high-value fixed targets.
Further modifications followed in 2002 when the French Ministry of Defense contracted MBDA to develop a submarine- and ship-launched variant of the SCALP EG. This version underwent underwater testing in 2010, expanding the missile’s versatility across different branches of the military. The SCALP EG was integrated into the French Mirage 2000D and Rafale fighters, while Storm Shadow was adopted for the Tornado and Eurofighter Typhoon. In 1997, the UK officially contracted MBDA to produce long-range Storm Shadow missiles as part of the RAF’s Conventionally Armed Stand-Off Missile (CASOM) program.
Since then, several nations have acquired the Storm Shadow and its variants. Italy and the UAE purchased Storm Shadow missiles in 1999 to arm the Italian Tornado IDS and the UAE’s Mirage fleet. Greece followed in 2000 by ordering SCALP EG missiles for its Mirage fighters, placing an additional order in 2003. With its advanced guidance systems, stealthy airframe, and powerful warhead options, the SCALP EG/Storm Shadow remains one of the most effective air-launched cruise missiles in service today.

The SCALP-EG Overall

The SCALP-EG is an air-launched cruise missile from MBDA, designed for long-range precision strikes. It has a stealth form, a range of +250km, a weight of 1,300kg and uses a Turbomeca Microturbo TRI 60-30 engine with 550 daN for subsonic flight. Navigation is provided by a combination of INS, GPS and TERCOM, while the IIR target recognition system enables a precise final approach phase.
The missile is equipped with a 500 kg BROACH dual warhead, which combines a pre-penetration charge and a main explosive charge to destroy hardened targets. It can be deployed by some Mirage 2000 and all Rafale after F.2.1 standard and has been optimised for high penetration power against strategic targets such as bunkers, radar stations and command posts.

The SCALP-EG In-Game

The implementation of the SCALP-EG could be an exciting innovation for air combat modes such as Realistic (RB) and Simulator (SB), possibly with a future SEAD mode. The missile would work similarly to the SBU-64: The player marks a GNSS target point, launches the missile, which flies autonomously to the target and activates its terminal IIR search system shortly before impact. Alternatively, it could also be implemented with just GNSS guidance. In practice, it would be useful either way, especially against large or static targets such as radar systems, bases, frontlines with high target density or stationed air defense systems, all of which can already be found in the game. Anyway, cruise missiles would be of little use against individual tanks, as the quantity and guidance of already existing guided bombs, for example, is much more effective and reliable.

Thanks for your time, hope you liked it :salute:

Rafale F2 ~ F4.2 and Mirage 2000D (R2 ~ RMV) deployed SCALP-EG

I didn’t know that SCALP-EG had IIR. Does that mean it also has the ability to hit moving targets?
