Maps

I really like that the maps in War Thunder are big, but the problem is that they feel incredibly empty. I want to grind Close Air Support (CAS) aircraft, but the matches usually just feature the same four base objectives and ground units we’ve been looking at for the last ten years—nothing has changed. We need Air Realistic Battles (RB) to make CAS aircraft actually useful. In my experience, it’s rare to even bomb a base in a CAS plane, yet that is practically the only thing you can do with them unless you get a Simulator map or Mysterious Valley in Air RB. This leaves you carrying a full loadout of bombs, which slows your plane down and makes you an easy target for every fighter on the map. A perfect example of this is the Su-24M. It really suffers from this meta because faster fighter aircraft steal the bases first, and the Su-24M is simply too slow to reach them before getting shot down—unless you take the long way around the massive, EMPTY map.

Anyone else annoyed with the big EMPTY maps?

Empty maps annoy me very much as they remind me of my empty life, playing War Thunder and nothing much else.

Man, if only we had this in GRB. I hate the small maps!

Yes, that is true. You’re not even playing a tank game, it’s just CoD at this point. Can’t use tanks like tanks.

Yep, very few Long range maps, and it sucks. I would love a super huge map where I could send a friend in a puma out mark a target and me and my other friends just use hummels to indirect fire and kill the target. Larger maps would encourage teamwork to win, help with the CAs issue, and make the game more interesting in terms of combat. They could also have towns on the map like they do currently in maps like The big Sinai (don’t remember its name), but the map would be much bigger. Anywho I do agree, the current ARB maps are boring, they should give us actual objectives that change the way the battle would go depending on how a team does.

One major argument players often bring up is the issue of CAS. However, this could easily be balanced by introducing AI-controlled SPAA, AA, and SAM installations. For example, a top-tier map could feature automated S-300 or Patriot missile positions, while lower-tier maps could utilize stationary flak, classic AA guns, and mobile units like the M16 MGMC, Wirbelwind, or ZSU. that would make the CAS player actually think.

To make this work, developers should expand the map scale and rethink the overall game mode design. While larger maps mean matches would take longer to win, the strategic depth would make them more fun. They should look at games like IL-2 Sturmovik for campaign inspiration, or examine how DCS World handles dynamic battlefield environments. It’s time to actually make maps good, rather than just endlessly adding generic ones and leaving them untouched forever.
