Man-in-the-Loop: Guidance Mode for Munitions with TV and IR Seekers

Oooh, Good question

Let me go yeet a Spice-250 from 40km away

you can still get POINT beyond 30 km depending on line of sight or size of target

for example, a ship is ez, but a tank requires u to get closer

POINT lock is ground, TRACK lock is vehicles, the latter depends on target size, yeah. But none of these ranges changed.

Or you can jsut pick a target at the map, and yeet it. MITL works then too

The TV/IR seeker still needs to lock that first. You can’t launch using INS/GNSS.

Testing it now, fired at a target 40km away with Spice-250, see where it goes standby

Just fired a Spice-250 from 40-45km. If you do nothing, it just flies onwards for basically forever

But if you use the MITL when the target is in the FoV (from a level flight) you can set a target point and it will go to that point, its a bit fiddly but does work

Just repeated with a 50+km shot.

So yeah:

Fire towards the target

switch to MITL and update the target point, this seems to have unlimited range

Then when the bomb switches from level flight to a dive, you can theoretically update it again to switch to a specific target.

So if nothing changes, we have LOAL at pretty extreme ranges, even if it initially requires LoS of the target

In case anyone was wondering

  • If you launch multiple munitions, the MitL guided one is the one you launched last
  • If the actively controlled munition gets shot down/impacts it will switch to the last launched one that’s still in the air

Yeah, that was sort of to be expected. I was really hoping for INS/GNSS launches to become possible, though. That way you could also ripple off a large quantity way faster.

Has anyone else noticed rhat in the dev server, using MITL makes your plane either uncontrollably dive or guide towards the enemy

US CAS actually eating good?? No way.

Stormbreakers and SLAMERs gonna have a field day

I wouldn’t get too excited just yet, MITL changes pretty much nothing for Top tier cas, GBU 53s are pretty much going to be used exactly the same as SPICE 250s, but they might actually be much worse because of the HEAT warhead of the SDB II.

From what I can tell, it’s forcing your aircraft to point towards your datalinked munition. In cases where the missile is sea skimming, it will force your aircraft into a dive too to maintain it within ‘datalink cone’ of your aircraft.

I guess this is how Gaijin is going to balance MITL further, because this is not realistic. In many cases, or maybe all cases, you require a datalink pod to use MITL, these datalink pods are designed to have a much wider coverage than shown here.

For instance AXQ-14 and ZSW-1 (both not in game, but required):

Yeah, it points your mouse aim at what the munition has locked.
The camera can also completely freak out while relocking. Needs some love.

I haven’t really had problems with HEAT AGMs since the large caliber HEAT rework. And with the GBU-53 I’ve gotten only one hits for the 20 or so targets I tested it on.

Feels more like bugged auto-pilot just trying to assume the same direction of travel as the weapon/camera PoV.

Was thinking a bug report next week if nothing has changed

On the dev server it’s almost a complete copy paste of the SPICE 250 (check warhead weight and fill, it should have AFX - 757), WIP.

Hm after a bit more testing, I think you are right, it seems to only reorientate once each time you enter the MITL view and not continuously. At least I hope it’s just that. The datalink pods are required still though afaik.

As they should be, and are for something like the Buc S2B and has been since day 1 despite doing nothing. Kinda nice its not just a waste weapon station

So yeah, if aircraft dont have DL pods, bug report them

is there a list of missles/bombs with MITL and the aircraft that have them currently on the dev server?

Yep on the patchnotes

after testing in an actual game safe to say this feature is going to be completely useless in its current state, forcing you to dive towards your enemy while your aircraft uncontrollably tries to align itself with the bomb all so you can re lock is miserable, not to mention the extremely poor game design of rendering targets makes them impossible to use, as air targets typically dont render ground units, meaning that while youre in the bomb sight, youre starting at a literally empty battlefield with no enemies and random fires.
