I’ve had the Typhoon’s radar pointed at something I could visually see and nothing, not a blip on the radar screen. I cant imagine how many targets i’ve never know were even there because the radar never found the target. (in ARB you can avoid some the issues because you dont need the radar to find targets, and can just hard lock everything using the HMD, not an option in ASB)
There is something fundementally broken with the radar, and is widely considered inferior to its predecessor the Blue Vixen currently, which just makes no sense, at worst they should be equal. They are not even close.
And thats just basic mechanical scan radars, not including all the missing functionality like Priority track, which makes its into a psuedo AESA-like radar in what it can do.
I’d guess 12.7, as a slightly weaker Gripen A by the sounds of it. But yeah, would make a good premium for that BR, Should make a proper suggestion for it
An ESA radar, IRST and more ground strike weapons might not be in their eyes enough to justify a new variant, they might unfortunately skip it. I sure hope not.
They also might have their own Sekrit Documents for centerline PL-12s demonstrated on the J-10C
Ive had a similar issue with the N001VEP where often times especially in TWS it just refuses to lock anything I assume its the abysmal scan rate but man that coupled with the R-77 makes it imo one of the worst 13.7
Nah, I doubt it. Sure, probably good when it was new, but I seriously doubt it would even come close to the performance of the CAPTOR-M.
Blue Vixen, the CAPTOR-Ms predecessor was considered on-par with AN/APG-73 despite being smaller. So Blue Vixen was/is a better radar than the AN/AWG-9
In the replay, it looks like the radar spotted it, but in game, it saw nothing until I switched TWS modes. Scan beam definetly passed over the target multiple times
blue vixen and AWG-9 are 2 different classes of radar. AWG-9 with a skilled operator would beat blue vixen. APG-71 would probably give CAPTOR-M some competition
Yeah, hopefully the scan bar bug fix will help a bit there.
But yeah, from a few people who’ve commented on both their experiences in the Su-27 and Typhoon. They prefer the Su-27s radar because its bad but fairly accurate. Typhoons radar is bad and just makes them mad
I mean I would still take a EF because the R-77 coupled with a terrible radar is just so sad. I wish we had something like the MiG-29M (with a fixed flight model bc for some reason the MiG-29s flight models are still terrible) where you can carry a decent amount of missiles including the R-77 on an aircraft with a good radar it would probably be 13.7
