There is a Gripen NG prototype between the C and NG which could be added for the in-between role.
Slide 11 even shows one with AIM-9M rather than IRIS-T, and it still has new features like an upgraded engine, MAW, AESA radar etc.

I’d prefer upgraded USAF F-16C, they were upgraded to f16v BLK 70 standard and got a better EW system on top of that
