The previous version not only had the effect of the windshield being perforated by bullets, but also had the possibility of lubricating oil smearing your face after the engine was injured, just like the effect of the windshield being blocked in the movie “Vitaev”.
Previously, enemy planes that were injured and smoking after them would gradually block the windshield with fuel particles that leaked out. Choking makes people uncomfortable.
These was great times when Glock kick in you have full black screen and you can do nothing and when your pilot was wounded screen became red and you can’t pull so mutch… make SB great again Gajin
Imho it was more oil - have in mind that this feature is (or was like u describe it) from my pov incomplete. Why? Because some planes had actually a mechanism implemented which allowed them to clean their windshield during flight. At least late 109s could use fuel (provided by an extra fuel line) to clean their view, so it would be fair to implement this “cleaning” feature too…
Funnily enough I was thinking about this earlier. Wings of Prey and Birds of Steel had this feature and it’s missed here. It adds to immersion greatly.
It annoys me how War Thunder can have these great features that for almost no reason at all gets deleted over time. I remember when they added realistic external aircraft sounds where Spitfires actually sounded like Spitfires flying over in tank battles. Now it just feels like most aircraft have generic sound effects.
The game sounds annoy me quite a bit actually as almost everything is a step backwards. In the early days (and in Birds of Steel) the I-16 had this lovely loud and raspy engine note that has been neutered now. The Tempest/Dora sound effect (they’re both powered by the same engine apparently…) today feels almost completely muted. I didn’t know the Napier Sabre, an engine known for being loud was so quiet. It’s such a shame too as back in the day it had a lovely and powerful engine note.
Give me this sound back not the muted weak crap we have now.
Also Gaijin for the love of god STOP sneaking external sounds into the cockpit, I can hear machine gun fire headed my direction from miles away.
Yeah, I remember this back in the day. Damaged engine/oil leak would trigger oil on the windscreen.
There’s still some oil on the canopy when you follow behind another plane leaking or smoking, though, but that’s different from the “your own engine is damaged” oil splatter that used to be there.
Also, it’s been AGES, but I think there even used to be some blood splatter if your pilot was injured. Not much, but like if you took a damaging hit you’d have a bit of blood on the canopy as well as bullet holes.
