Literally Constant Uptiers?

I’m somewhat curious to see if this happens to anybody else. Back when I was spading my 5.7 USSR vehicles, uptiers were almost constant. Very often, perhaps around 40% of the time, I got a full uptier. At that time I figured that there were just a lot of 6.7 players. Maybe it’ll get better when I start spading 6.7s? Nope. For all 11 6.0-6.7 tanks I spaded in the USSR tree, every match was an uptier. I quit playing for around 2 weeks during that time, since it wasn’t enjoyable anymore. Worst of all was the IS-2 (1944), an already mediocre tank for its battle rating. But I returned, and the uptiers continued.

Are uptiers not based off of BR popularity? If 7.7 is so popular that every 6.7 match is actually a 7.7 match, can somebody explain why I’m facing M60A1s, T95E1s, Bradleys, M551s, Gepards, M48A2 G A2s etc. (all 8.3-8.7 tanks) nearly every match, while playing 7.7 vehicles?

Is this an issue for anybody else? Is it just my luck, or imagination?

dude it’s so obvious, u feel suffering till toptier → u donate to get there faster or instantly. whole game now is about milking u dry, there are no more comfort zones

But what I don’t get is, I get put into uptiers every match with real players. Doesn’t that mean that those players are in a normal match? It doesn’t make sense to me how every match has real players who are playing at their own BR, but I don’t get into matches in my BR.

As a side-note, just played a 6.7 match, went well but it was a full uptier :)
But then I play 7.7 and never get a 7.7 match

Depends on how many ppl are at each BR.

If there’s 100 pl at BR 7.7, 10 at 6.7 and 10 at 5.7 then you are much more likely to be bottom BR in a 7.7 game than top BR in a 5.7 game.

Happens to me a lot as well.

Been playing Russia at 4.0 … keep seeing enemies at 5.0. They have no problem one-shotting or crippling my KV1-S. KV-85, VK 3002, Sherman Firefly, Chi-Ri, and the list goes on. Then there’s the Churchill VII which I can’t scratch the paint off.

They need to change it so the battles are not defaulted to have a full BR spread. It should only happen when there’s no other matches available - and with the number of players daily that would be very rare. I’d rather wait a full minute or 2 to get a fair battle.

I 100% agree. Given that I already wait 30 seconds for a match (I’m not expecting an instant match), I’d sacrifice some extra time for a fun game.

@Josephs_Piano I think you have a fundamental misunderstanding of what I am saying. I know that if everybody plays 7.7, I will get uptiered. But can you explain how 6.7 always gets uptiered (this means many people play 7.7, maybe due to the new PzH 2000), and 7.7 for me always gets uptiered too?
If it’s just player counts, I would always get 7.7 games.

Player counts vary over time - even from minute to minute.

And I don’t believe you are ALWAYS getting uptiered - just those are the ones you remember.

No, I’m pretty confident. I recorded it on paper once :)

“Player counts vary over time - even from minute to minute.”

And you’re suggesting… every time my match finishes, every player goes to my br + 1? Just for me? I’m flattered but I doubt it.

Absolutely - Gaijin and all the rest of us have it in for you - shame you found out.

Otherwise “I recorded it once” isn’t great evidence. I’d suggest you record the BR’s for your last 20 games from the replays, THEN you might have something to talk about.

But in any case, simple probability means long streaks of uptiering will happen more often than people are willing to believe and confirmation bias will kick in.

Calculate the probability and the stats. It most likely is entirely reasonable that you get many uptiers in a row.

some brs are vacums some arent which needs to be fixed

What do you think I did

That again, makes no sense. If 6.7 was always sucked up to 7.7 due to 7.7 being popular, 7.7 would not be sucked to 8.7 constantly, because it would be popular. Not everything should be a vacuum at once.

It doesn’t make much sense for consistent uptiers to happen at multiple BRs like that.
Unless you chalk up a lot of this to random chance for like… a couple months, across multiple BRs and players (I know at least a few who have similar experiences), which is very, very unlikely

Also that’s only if matchmaking is completely random, which it isn’t. There’s supposedly reasoning and purpose behind it.

Replay evidence or it didn’t happen

the mix of BR’s in a team is supposed to be set - eg max 4 top BR’s in a team - but the picking of players to go into those slots is random.

Also forming quads can make it less random as you’ll get all members of the squad in a team regardless of BR (although still has to satisfy the maximum of 4 top BR)

What is your reason to say “I recorded the data” if you aren’t going to share it with us? Why not post the evidence which supports your point?

Because I recorded it months ago out of curiousity, and I’m just saying my findings? You can say that it didn’t happen as much as you want but I know it did, I can see its results being proven further now, and as the complaints of others show, it isn’t just me.

I’d love a more detailed explanation of what you mean by this, and if that’s the actual matchmaking system used by Gaijin.

I see. Well, without the data, we can’t make useful observations/conclusions from this situation. Human perception, without specific numbers, is often biased and unreliable. So that was why I was interested.

only 4 people can be top of the bracket.

Rest get various grades of uptiers.

This means you are significantly more likely to experience some degree of uptier.
https://wiki.warthunder.com/mechanics/matchmaking

The matchmaker operates on two main conditions:

  • Battles are formed of lineups within 1.0 BR of each other.
  • Lineups can be matched against other lineups within ±1.0 BR.
  • The number of players on each team with BRs at the top of the BR range cannot exceed 4.

As a solution to uptiers,

if you fly planes - give air simulator a try.

https://warthunder.highwaymen.space/SimCal/

We have uptiers, but you know ahead of time.

Every 2 days, the brackets rotate and what was uptier may become downtier or the degrees shift.

Caveats:
Rewards are abysmal (Useful actions system).
Avoid if you’re flying rank V jets as they pay too little SL to offset spawncost.
It costs SL to spawn, not die.
Mode becomes nearly unplayable during air grind events due to pve riggers.

rank 6 and rank 4 and above/below are fine. It’s just post-ww2 pre korean jets that are absurdely expensive.
