Seeing have gaijin have made locking helicopters with air-to-air missiles practically impossible, at least using a Maverick or Brimstone to kill a helicopter is bizarrely a far more reliable option.
Except the new Mi-28NM
That thing will not lock at all until you are also close enough to spit at it…
Stupidly fiddly yeah, i’ve been flying out my typhoon for the sole purpose of BUK/28NM hunting, and the finicky TGP lock really doesn’t help, especially given the lethality of the opponent’s system.
This was recently compounded with the addition of a dubious at best targeting/launch box for brimstones (maybe this will be alleviated with the HOBS capability of Brimstone 2s) but for an already farily limited system, nerfing/restricting them further is pretty scummy on gaijin’s end
I think this does apply to most vehicles? Have you tried a AH-64E and Z-10ME perhaps, to assume if it’s something to do with the DIRCM? To be completely honest this has nothing to do with the targetting pod itself and the helicopter but rather the game, I’ve tried to manually lock-on flying objects with some struggling.
What’s frustrating is I can lock almost anything else… just last game I was spamming lock, trying to lock a Mi28 right in front of me and it managed to instead lock a jet flying left-to-right 5km behind it… like the jet was barely noticeable but apparently that was more acceptable target than the massive Mi28 that was literally filling up my camera…
No, it’s been an inconsistency for a long time, especially with vehicles with small lock ‘boxes’ like the AH Mk1 (64D/E too) and LITENING TGPs, but i think it’s just that the ‘stickiness’ while trying to lock is lacking, so I struggle to quickly track a target that might be firing on me for example.
Stuff that doesn’t seem to have this issue are vehicles with ‘ball-style’ underslung optics, like the AH-60 and UCAV drones, which have a far easier time locking for some reason, not sure why.
Also on the topic of the Britpache, bring back first spawn Starstreaks as a mean to deal with early heli spam, please gaijin 🙏
On my part, Mi-28NM radar’s is a complete mess, it’s not clear what target you’re tracking nor it does have IFF, even though I have a key to lock-on target and said target is selected, I can’t do it on the first try, usually I just go for visual locking using the designator and camera. At this very moment I can’t try by myself, perhaps if someone could work on this could be helpful to prove this issue true.
@I_MiikaL_I I could agree with you, it does make sense with cameras that has small targetting/locking areas being the reason for this, issue, is there any report made for this?
There were a few made when the bug that laser guidance optics simply couldn’t lock things, but I haven’t seen much fuss made since those were hastily fixed, which left a few bugs behind i reckon
The whole idea that IIR can be fooled by a laser is pretty much an urban legend, it’s been mentioned in the occasional brochure, but nothing concrete has been shown.
Furthermore, the idea that a laser can decoy a weapon system that’s locking onto the image of the target, as opposed to it’s thermal signature, is pretty dubious, and I suspect fictional until those lasers become a hard counter, as opposed to a soft one, (as lasers grow in strength and decrease in size anyway)
Someone buy a very expensive thermal camera and shine a powerful laser at it, for science and to put this meme force field that is LDIRCM to the test lol
Well ideally gaijin would just take the mountains of info that states that LDIRCM doesn’t interfere with IIR seekerheads (like the one on the 9x Blk2 or IRIS-T SLM) instead of spitting out their usual ‘we believe this is a clear marketing lie’ spiel and closing bug reports.
Their opinion is the minority here, and once again goes against fact, to no one’s surprise lol
