Basic Background
Singapore has owned the Leopard 2 battle tank since mid-2007. The originally used Leopard 2A4s came from the Bundeswehr’s stocks and replaced the older AMX-13s. When the contract was signed at the end of 2006, 96 vehicles were initially ordered, 30 of which were intended for spare parts. Due to the increased demand, the number of operational vehicles increased, so that in 2007 a total of 102 Leopard 2s were in service. In May 2014 it was announced that further tanks of this type had been exported to Singapore since 2012. The exact number of units in this delivery was classified as confidential and passed on to the secret service of the German Bundestag. According to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), this increased the total number of Leopard 2s in Singapore to 182.
The Leopard 2SG was used for the first time in the Wallaby exercise in Australia at the end of 2008. To increase the protection concept, the tanks were subsequently equipped with the Leopard 2 Evolution package from IBD Deisenroth Engineering and presented to the public in 2010.
At the Army Open House 2017 exhibition, two Leopard 2SG were spotted with a new commander sight system for the first time.
The Leopard 2SG (Late) Overall
The core of the post modernization Leopard 2SG is a standard Leopard 2A4 but upgraded to the Leopard “Evolution”-Standards, with additional AMAP armor on the turret, front and side hull - I don’t currently know whether AMAP-L (Spall Liner) was also installed, but it is a standard part of the Leopard 2 Evolution package. The turret armor is identical to that of the Leopard 2PL already in the game.
According to sources, the sideskirts should have a protection of at least 600-700mm at a steering angle of 60° (this can possibly result in ~300mm at 90° / flat angle) against Chemical rounds. In tests, the AMAP sideskirts were able to withstand a tandem missile with up to 750mm pen at an angle of 90° (flat).
At least two upgraded Leopard 2A4 main battle tanks (MBTs) - operated by the Singapore Army under the designation Leopard 2SG and incorporating the new system called Commander’s Open Architecture Panoramic Sight (COAPS) - were publicly displayed at the Army Open House 2017 (AOH 2017) event from May 27 to 29. These also seem to have new armor (compared to before), with changes particularly noticeable on the front hull and turret, even though some changes rather seem to indicate mock-up/lighter armor for training and demonstration purposes.
COAPS is part of the SAF’s efforts to upgrade the Leopard 2SG since 2010. Ongoing upgrades include the installation of a Battlefield Management System (BMS), crew cabin cooling system, auxiliary power unit (APU), rear view camera, internal vehicle electronics and fire control system (FCS) modifications.
According to Elbit’s specifications, COAPS is a modular, two-axis stabilized sight system specifically designed for armoured fighting vehicle (AFV) and MBT applications. Based on an open architecture system, it can be configured with various sensors, including 3-5 µm or 8-12 µm thermal imaging cameras, day and night vision CCD cameras, and eye-safe laser rangefinders to meet mission requirements.
The Leopard 2SG is equipped with an MTU MB-837 Ka501 diesel engine that delivers 1500 hp - and reaches an official maximum road speed of 68 / -31 km/h and weighs 58.7 tons.
The firepower of the Leopard 2SG is identical to that of the others; 120mm L/44 which fires with DM13, DM33 and DM63, as well as DM78 for training, plus DM12 and possibly DM11 - subject for more research, as with Spall Liners.
