Both the Italian F.3s and F-16s where leased, and maintenance and such on the D is done by RAF groundcrew, so I don’t see the problem personally, there’s a commitment to the airframe, and it’s not like there’s much more to add to britian with the typhoon being denied for the next couple of updates
