This is a discussion about a topic and related projects that I’ve been studying for a while - kamikazes. I’ve been developing some mechanics that would make it possible to implement kamikaze planes in the game, but I’d like to discuss and hear your opinions on the issue of balance. Do you think kamikaze planes would be unbalanced? I would also like, if possible, feedback from @BVV_d on the topic and how Warthunder sees this type of mechanic
Its already pretty common as a “revenge bombing” tactic.
I don’t think that kind of “game play” needs to be encouraged.
There are always those who get beaten up and try to get revenge through cowardice. That’s quite common.
I doubt any company would really want to encourage suicide bombing, it’s probably better to leave it out of the game, not to mention that kamikaze was quite ineffective in real life
I think we already have to many issues with people not respawning, adding suicide planes would not help the issue
Depends, there was a joke that when a US carrier got hit by a kamikaze it was back to Hawaii for a rebuild, when a British carrier got hit by one they just broke out the brooms to sweep the bits of plane of the flight deck and then resumed flight ops. The armoured carrier philosophy really paid off against them.
As interesting as Kamikazes would be, only one Nation would get them.
And that would be Japan with the Yokosuka_MXY-7.
These would be dropped by G4M and G8N Bombers and would basiclly “behave” like FPV drones from Infantry Thunder (just with a pilot)
There was no other nation that had dedicated Kamikazes in Service.
Only Germany with the Fieseler Fi 103R had a similar “Plane” but it was never used.
But any plane with a bomb can be used as a Kamikaze so yeah.
But a dedicated Kamikaze Plane will be a no no.

Not only Japan! Germany also used kamikaze tactics late war where they would fly an old broken plane into the tails of B-17s and the theory was to bail out before or after impact. I don’t think this should be implemented into the game though nobody would really use them anyway.
Yeah i know about the Sonderkommando Elbe but they werent really Kamikazes and didnt operated purpose build Kamikaze Planes like the Japanese like you decribed.
They where to be expected to bail out before or after ramming into the Plane unlike Japanese Kamikazes who would die 100%.
Thats why they where also called “Ramming Fighters”
Also the Term Kamikaze in this thread was used for Flying you Plane into a Ship or Tank to destroy it and the Sonderkommando Elbe planes had no explosive ordanance to do these things since Bombers where a lot more fragile then Tanks or ships.
just enough fuel to get to the bombers and a single mg 131 with 60 rounds most of the times.
japanes planes on the other hand where loaded with fuel and Bombs to archive their goal.
The idea I’m actually proposing is that you would be the bomber carrying the kamikaze, not the bomb, and that when you release it, you would have the option to guide it to the target, and when it hits the target, your camera would return to the bomber. I think that would solve the problem.
The idea is that you are the bomber carrying the kamikaze, and when released, you can guide it to the target, solving the “suicide for a single kill” problem (a guided bomb, in short).
Not just that. They pretty much turned anything that could carry a bomb into a manned one way attacker.
OP did not specify he meant the “baka bombs”. Only Kamikaze as a tactic/game mechanic in general.
That already exists in the game as the The Ki-48-II Otsu and Ki-148 Missile.
Probably as close as Gaijin is comfortable with approaching the idea for reasons already mentioned.
I think the only real problem would be that you would be heavily reliant on requesting a target for an aerial strike, since kamikaze aircraft like the OHKA were designed to be launched from a distance.
I believe Kamikaze does work on open top vehicles and trucks.
Im of 2 different minds.
The first is that it would be a bit of balancing/gameplay nightmare, with people ramming into players to do damage, rather than using weapons. This could be mitigated by having any kills gained by kamikaze having a notable SL/RP penalty though, so its really not profitable to ever really do it.
The other though, is that it would be interesting to see Gaijins Physics/Damage model take a step forward, and for the impact to actually be registered and modeled, rather than it just doing nothing currently. If the game is about realism, then it should actually do something.
Id start with naval, that is where it was more “historical” and where it would be less of a problem than in ground, and go from there.
Basiclly what we already got with the Ki 48 II and He 177 A-3

This Part where the camera follows the “Kamikaze” and returns when it hits the target could only really be realised with the Japanese Ohka since it got a Pilot in it and no other Nation had something similar in Service.
(Germany had the Fieseler Fi 103R but it was never fitted withy any explosives or used in Kamikaze attacks)
From the controls it would be almost the same as the FPV drones from Infantry mode where you deploy the FPV (Ohka gets dropped) and then you fly it into a target to destroy it and after that the view goes back to the Infantry Man (Bomber where Ohka startetd).
But with this we have 2 Big Problems.
-
The Kamikaze part itself where we get told from gaijin to “Kill” the Pilot to archive the Destruction of a enemy vehicle (not that we would care or already do it with just a Plane ramming a Open Top vehicle to Kill it but that is ouer choice to do so)
-
In short it would be kind of a MITL (Man In The Loop) weapons wich Gaijin reacts very allergic to as of now
Yokosuka was not the only Kamikaze plane. Aside from that, in terms of name, no. But multiple countries did do ramming on par with how Kamikazes would function, though every country was told to eject. Even Japan, oddly enough, but most didn’t.
It does, and to an extent works on non open top light tanks and SPAA, mainly will just turn something yellow on them tho. But yes, crashing with any plane into an open-top will kill them usually. Have survived it many times tho too myself in stuff like M42 lol
This is True but most other “Kamikaze Planes” where converted from Regular Planes while the Ohka was build for this exact purpose.
And in Term of Gameplay only the Ohka could be added as a True Kamikaze only “Plane” for destroying Groubd Targets.
Any other “Kamikaze” Plane that was used by Japan/Germany woulkd serve no purpose ingame since they would be mostly just like the regular planes -weapons/ammo and with a bomb, nothing special what we could do already with the regular planes.
That is why i see the Ohka as the only Possible True Kamikaze “Plane” that could be added and would provide unique gameplay.
So Basiclly this would be the gameplay
That is true. Though there is a variant intended to have 2 20mm cannons. Though I’m pretty sure some also claimed one with a 37mm, one with a longer-barreled 57mm as well, though of course almost all of these are unverified since trying to find any info on any of the 3 would be incredibly difficult.
