well its not an issue with the ka 50, its an issue with helis in general. damage models of helicopters are blown out the door and they shouldnt survive certain specific damage and should survive other types.
for example, indirect explosive protection should be a bit more across the board but protection against apfsds should be way less.
the ka 50 shouldnt die due to loss of the tail since it dosent need the tail, neither does any other vertical twin blade helicopter need a tail.
It might be an issue with Helis at large…but it benefits the Ka-50/52 much more, by a large margin.
- My AH-64 cannot take a direct hit to the engine by anything and live.
- Do yourself a favor and take the AH-64 into the armor viewer and “shoot at it” with Machine guns and autocannons. Then do the exact same thing with Ka-50/52. The pilot is invincible.

KA-50 series has a really fat nose compared to all the other helicopters, and combined with the big armor plate/bulkhead at the end makes it effectively the best spaced-armor in the game. Also, I don’t think aircraft skin is modeled in the same way tank armor is so the rounds don’t riccochet upward when they hit the top of KA-50’s nose so they get eaten too.
What armor plate bulkhead? I’m not at my gaming rig at the moment, but I don’t remember an armor plate bulkhead in the nose.

I think KA-52's windows are just super bugged
Stinger directly into 40mm of bulletproof glass, it penetrates but somehow doesn’t damage the pilot, rotors, or controls
Even worse with a sidewinder (MIM-72C) somehow, only damages superstructure and the radar, consistently.
But, it can somehow take out a crew member through the radar??

oh im not contesting specific helicopter survivability.
im just saying some people make bad arguments about how losing a tail should kill the ka-50 when they have much better arguments to put against it (and yes i do hate the ka-50 spam)
I’ma be real with you chief. Those Vikhrs are insane. I got a 12 aircraft kill game not including tanks with those things in a full up tier against F-16 jets.
The only real thing that makes the Ka-50 good is the Vikhr missiles and coaxial rotor. If the Apache series had a proximity hellfire with good mobility, it would mostly fix the issue entirely to be honest.
Other than that, we can’t really do anything about the Ka series flying without tails because that’s pretty much correct, though adding it so the fuselage has issues flying without the tail would be a good idea.

I went above 1:1 against Ka-50s using Apache… mostly after the AGM-114 buff, back in heli PVP days.
Since then Vikhrs got fixed [nerfed] at least 2 more times.
- Ka-50 losing its tail section would down the aircraft.
(the ONE example I can find anywhere of a Ka-52 flying with tail damage was just that, tail damage, not tail section missing or mangled.)
Losing chunks of the tail would set the center of gravity for the aircraft too far forward for something like the collective to adjust for… not to mention the explosive force that knocked said chunk off.
The “flying with no tail section” is just more gaijin snail magic because they have a hardon for this aircraft. - This is the only helicopter I’ve seen take a 120mm HEAT shell directly to the right engine and it count as “tail damage” (Image in 4k earlier in the thread) and that’s because the hotbox on this particular POS has it that almost the entire aircraft is considered one piece, which is given a stupid amount of module health.
I didn’t take video of it yesterday, but this POS aircraft took 2 proximity hits and a direct missile hit from ADATS AntiAir/AntiTANK Missiles, and suffered engine damage before landing on its pad and completely repairing. It’s the only heli in the game that I’ve never actually seen it be considered “too damaged to repair” after a “soft landing.”
It’s been artificially buffed into a literal flying tank, and that’s on top of it being the only helicopter allowed to have Fragsleeve laser ATGMS. (because “balance” lmao)
Gaijin has no shame here.

They’re not really flarable and you can use them against ground targets just as effectively. Plus, a Vikhr being shot at your helicopter is nearly a guaranteed death sentence.
Still though, the Ka-50/52 are very good helicopters.
I think part of the reason people hate the Ka-50 is because it’s a premium and you see one of the best anti-tank missiles almost every game because there’s no need to grind it.
Literally gotta be point-blank range to get a lock lmao.

Oddly enough most of them have that got downed and recorded were shot by non IR missiles (ATGMs etc)
There are some vids of it being shot down by US and Nordic IR MANPADS
