Italian–Hungarian–Romanian Tech Tree: Pros and Cons
I think Italy could become a much more interesting and complete nation by combining Italian, Hungarian and Romanian vehicles into one expanded tech tree.
Romania already has vehicles represented in the Italian tree, and there have been several community proposals for an Italian–Hungarian–Romanian combination.
🇮🇹🇭🇺🇷🇴 Why this combination could work
Pros
- It would fill gaps in the Italian tree
Italy has some noticeable gaps at certain BRs. Hungarian and Romanian vehicles could provide additional lineups without having to create an entirely new nation.
- Lots of unique vehicles
Romania has more than just Soviet copy-paste equipment. Vehicles such as the TR-85, TR-85M1, MLI-84 and various Romanian modifications could give Italy a much more unique Eastern European character.
- Better variety
The three nations would offer very different gameplay:
- 🇮🇹 Italian vehicles — fast, mobile and wheeled
- 🇭🇺 Hungarian vehicles — a mixture of domestic designs and German/Soviet-derived equipment
- 🇷🇴 Romanian vehicles — Soviet-influenced designs with significant domestic modifications
This could create one of the most diverse tech trees in the game.
- Romania would not need its own full tech tree
A standalone Romanian tree would have difficulty avoiding large amounts of copy-paste equipment. Putting Romania into Italy would allow Gaijin to focus mainly on the most interesting and unique Romanian vehicles.
- Italy could become a proper ‘minor European nations’ tree
Instead of being almost entirely dependent on Italian vehicles, Italy could become a larger Southern/Central European tree containing Italy, Hungary and Romania.
Cons
- The tree could become overcrowded
If too many Hungarian and Romanian vehicles were added, Italy could eventually become extremely large compared with other nations.
- Too much copy-paste
Romania operated many Soviet and Western vehicles. Adding every T-55, MiG-21, MiG-29 or American vehicle would make the subtree feel repetitive.
The solution would be to prioritize Romanian modifications and indigenous designs rather than simply adding foreign vehicles.
- Identity problem
Some players could argue that an Italian–Hungarian–Romanian tree lacks a clear national identity.
However, this problem already exists to some degree with multinational tech trees, so it is not necessarily a deal-breaker.
- Hungary could get overshadowed
If Romania received a large subtree while Hungary remained relatively small, Hungarian vehicles could become less visible inside the Italian tree.
- Some players would prefer separate Balkan/Eastern European trees
Another possible solution would be a future Romanian–Yugoslav or broader Eastern European tree. This would give Romania more room for its Soviet-derived and Balkan equipment. Similar proposals already exist in the community.
My conclusion
I think an Italian + Hungarian + Romanian tech tree would be more realistic than an independent Romanian tech tree.
The key is quality over quantity: don’t add every vehicle Romania operated. Add the vehicles that are genuinely Romanian, significantly modified, or necessary to create complete lineups.
That would give Italy a very unique identity:
🇮🇹 Italy + 🇭🇺 Hungary + 🇷🇴 Romania = a diverse European tech tree with Western, German and Eastern influences.
Personally, I think this would be a much better solution than creating a Romanian tree filled with copy-paste vehicles.
