Is War Thunder Tanks the best game out there today?

Here’s the deal, if it’s slower than my HOTAS stick, it’s unrealistic.
I don’t care how much slower.
Again, slightly too fast is better than too slow, and War Thunder can’t go too fast on turret movement cause it’s done by the crew, we just tell them where to point the turret.
So HOTAS stick and mouse are identical in that regard.

Yeah I don’t know, I still prefer GHPC’s inputs over War Thunder’s, they feel more fluid and natural to me than the sharp and weightless feel you get when you use mouse aim.

Yes, things that happen in real life are realistic…

Real life delay would be an average of 400ms PER PERSON in an interaction. For example, Commander spots a new target, makes the decision to engage, tells gunner, 400 ms. Gunner hears command, processes command, begins to train gun on target, gunner tells commander gun is on target, 400ms +gun movement time +callback time. Commander recieves callback, decides to fire, relays fire command to gunner, +400ms. Gunner recieves fire command and executes command, +400ms. That is two seconds of delay between the spotting of a target and engagement without gun traversentime or any radio delay. Warthunder is spot target, move reticle, wait for gun movement, fire. See the difference? In Warthunder the player doesn’t control the crew, the player directly controls all aspects of the tank.

Seems good by the little scenario I did above.

Oh boy, using high powered electrohydraulic systems as a basis for an argument when they aren’t doing anything but driving. Slow and clunky in regards to their operation, not physical performance.

And if you are going to try reference how they can drive, make a jump into the air and fire, those are so staged it isn’t funny. Basically propaganda level just to show off.

If it is slower than my completely unrealistic control set optimized for fast reaction time and flawless integration to the highest speed computer technology available, then it isn’t realistic even though military grade technology is NOT AT ALL on the same level.

@AlvisWisla I would like nothing more than you for to explain how a commander’s machine gun moving with the commander buttoned up inside is realistic or a simulation grade mechanic. Calling Warthunder a Realistic Simulator doesn’t pan out very well when simple OBVIOUS things can be pointed out that are NOT REALISTIC. Warthunder is simply a vehiclular combat video game with some more realistic features, but is by no means a realistic simulator. Enlisted is at a higher level than Warthunder, and it’s focus isn’t even vehiclular combat. Squad and Hell Let Loose makes Warthunder look like Warthunder makes World of Tanks look, rediculous.

Also something to note is game engine limitations. The engine CANNOT simulate every aspect of real life accurately and realistically. So that is another big hole in the “Warthunder is a realistic simulator” claim you want to stand by.

Having got to move IRL turrets thanks to my military family, I can tell you the turret feels pretty weightless.
Obviously there’s inertia, and you can feel some of it, but the turret moves hilariously smoothly.

And War Thunder players go through that sequence in 1 - 3 seconds on average.

Yes, cause they engine swap for videos… /s

“Staged. They engine swapped for that video. Modern transmission!”

@AlvisWisla

This isn’t true at all. The biggest limiting factor to engagement speed in a situation where you are stopped already game and searching for targets is turret traverse rate, which I mentioned would add time in my little breakdown.

You’re the one that mentioned swapping engines, and then try to make fun of me for saying that? The videos showing performance characteristics are staged - planned, organized, or arranged in advance.

When are you going to address the realism of turrets moving with no operator present to operate them or APHE shells detonating in a sphere instead on a cone? Not realistic. Comon buddy, stay on topic here. Prove that Warthunder is a realistic simulator even with the GLARING problems. Ohh, tell us how it’s realistic even though the metal of the chassis can’t be torn and sheared open by heavy explosives. Oh oh, or how depot level repairs can be done out in the field in a combat situation in mere seconds. Thats a really good one.

Simple, our input is transferred to the instructor and tge instructor does the direct input. The lack of delay comes from the instructor being really fast. It is still indirect, since with dire controls you would be able to make a 360 degree turret rotation at a constant speed of half your max rotation speed. The WT instructor does not allow for that.

Delay isn’t the only thing that determines if it is direct or not.

That is completely untrue. Things that happen in real life are real, not realistic. Realistic is a word that is either used for media depictions being like reality, so real life can’t be realistic in that sense since it isn’t a depiction but the real thing itself.

Or if the word is used in context of real life it is to judge the likely hood of an event… Since likelihood rarely makes sense for events that already happened your sentence would be wrong, since realistic is then used specifically for things that haven’t happened yet.

Realism in the sense of how it is used in WT only applies to depictions. So in that sense the real world can never be realistic, since the word realistic only makes sense for imitations of reality but not for reality itself.

Tangent aside.

Median, not average. Since for skewed distribution the median gas to be used.

But yeah in general your point is correct. A real tank crew doesn’t have a hive mind. They need to communicate verbally which is an imperfect communication, so not only is the delay an issue but the accuracy how the command is carried out is as well.

For most aircraft it is though. But i agree tanks are trash.

I will agree that single seat prop aircraft are respresented quite well in sim mode. Especially when using a hotas, throttle, and rudders. Quite difficult to be successful. Those single seat props are the only vehicles I will ever claim is anything close to being simulator quality though.

I was under the understanding that the instructor only applied to aircraft. Does this also apply to naval as well? Is there an area with more information on this that I can read up on?

No the instructor also operates the tank. The difference is that with tanks it is always on and cannot be deactivated, even in sim it is always on.

"So what about ground vehicles, you ask? Yes, in ground warfare, the Instructor directly controls the ground vehicle itself. "

How the Instructor Works - War Thunder Wiki.

And if you now think: “the Instructor is on even in sim? That’s pathetic!”

Then yes, you are right.

cope? he’s telling the truth

This is actually one of the most disappointing things I’ve learned about Warthunder thusfar. The part that is operates like that in Sim as well is just sad.

Yep, when tanks were announced i was a beta tester.

I was pretty excited about tank sim. Back in the day world war mode wasn’t defined either. Because i came from aces high i hoped it would be a somewhat consistent battle on huge maps (back then 128 v 128 was talked about).

Then tanks came and i was like: “wait… That’s it? Well… It’s pretty much air sim only for me it seems.”

I kinda found a liking to air AB as well, as it is a great shooter. But RB is kinda the worst of both worlds for me. And tanks i mostly play because of mates that play tanks. I like them but the tank gameplay is a joke.

This is the only game I enjoy playing, though I never touch the tanks.

Since SOCOM died (SOCOM4 killed it) I have been rather sour on all shooters - and I HATE “Over the shoulder” view that we’re all stuck with because Devs just love.

War Thunder in general makes me sad and a bit bitter. I know I am biased in this regard and many disagree, but I miss the old War Thunder pre 2019 when there was not really any era mixing, a focus on the second world war and Germany got very cool and unique top tier 1946 Tanks to defeat IS-4 and other heavies. When April fools was truly wacky, I enjoyed the pirate sailboats.

Today, I need to spend hundreds of EUR to invest into GE to convert into millions of SL that I cannot use because I need it all for Box gambling, since Gaijin does not provide the vehicles I desire any other way. The Tanks I wanted, Panther II, Flakpanzer 341 Coelian and Tiger II 10.5 that I thought I had all the time in the world to get are gone, even more vehicle content on the chopping block for the same awful principles. Every Update is just Modern stuff and mainly air focused, while German WW2 aviation alone could fill multiple devblogs. And there is no point playing anything else besides Russia, the bias is disgusting.
