So does this mean that if I unlock the AIM-7F, there’s no need to unlock the AIM-7M? To be honest, the F/A-18A should be allowed to use the AIM-7P—at least then, spending tens of thousands of XP on extra research would have some meaning.

It’s feasible to make aim7m more multi-path resistant comparing to aim7f, which is also some of historically accurate since aim7f indeed using a improved seeker.
This can also be a justifaction of br difference for some vehicles.
