Incorrect, i have multiple times hit a Heli while it was stationary on the ground because it landed after i fired at it. It’s harder yes, but not impossible by any means.
You do have the option of not being a stationary fish in a barrel, you can move and hide. You can also fire at the actual helicopter.
I’ve however recently started playing the Swedish NASAMS 3 (TADS) that start with the same missiles and so far i’ve found that it helps by putting the first launcher down relatively early in or near spawn and then driving the radar away (it’s small and fast) to a better position where you can put up the second launcher nearby.
The radar is relatively easy to hide compared to contemporaries and the first launcher in spawn is good for distracting any aircraft that might already be up when you spawn in so that you can drive to a better position.
The CLAWS launcher vehicles are also smaller than the NASAMS so they should be easier to hide than the NASAMS launchers, comparatively at least.
You fired 4 missiles total against the helicopter, all from the same spot and the same conditions and none of them during the same volley and then you gave up.
Place your second launcher as well and not only one and fire from both, that way the missiles come from slightly different angles and have slightly different conditions and thus chance to hit. Fire one missile from each launcher during the same volley and don’t sit there and wait to see if the first hit or not, you have more than enough missiles in two launchers and ammo boxes to not worry about ammo that much.
I highly doubt having another missile coming slightly more left/right would somehow cancel out multipath or the fact the the missile cant see the heli at that height.
okay, will try to spam out 8 missiles next time i see one.
also, is it really enough ammo if i am supposed to be trying to take out several missiles too?
I didn’t say it would work 100% of the time, but it does in fact increase your chances of a hit, if the first one misses and the heli thinks the coast is clear and starts climbing the second missile might get a lock, all your missiles fired in that replay were flying in IOG during the terminal phase.
If you’re just here to complain and scream into the void then be my guest. i’m just trying to help, but if you’re not interested in my help then say that so that i don’t do this in vain.
Im just trying to figure out how to take out the top tier helis.
So far the answer just seems to be “hope for good luck”
If that is the answer, cool.
Im trying to set up for your strat to try but the games are deciding to make that difficult rn. Teams are melting before any cas shows up. One heli spawned so far but it was not a top tier one.
The real answer is honestly: same way you would any other enemy contact in the air. The only real difference is the active IRCM preventing IR missiles from working properly.
And I have personally never managed to hit a heli with a SAM SPAA other than SACLOS ones. And the heli appeared on the radar for like 5 seconds, I spammed a couple missiles it’s way and nothing.
Moving and hiding a radar vehicle plus 2 more launcher vehicles is practically impossible.
Not if that is the first thing you do. Many players tend to spawn SPAA if they die to an aircraft, that has worked well in the past, but these new multi vehicle SAM systems do not do well when played retaliatory, they are best played preventative. You should already be in the system and have had time to go away from spawn and set up you launchers spread out before a plane even spawns.
Even if you were to constantly first spawn a multivehicle AA to counter LDIRCM helis, not all maps allow for any meaningful setup either by lack of neccesary cover or any cover effective against LDIRCM helis being exposed to ground units (Maginot line being prime example).
