I feel its not Russian vehicles being better like they say or USA vehicles being better then Russian vehicles like you say but its more of like a trade off. Russian vehicles get better spall armor on the sides and they are much lower to the ground then most MBTs but they trade that off with being slower. Abrams are much faster and also get way better cheek armor but the sides are much easer to pen then it would be on a Russian MBT. Its all about different playstyles because they both a good at different things.
Well, my full nuanced opinion is good players never see onion layer 4: Armor.
However, T-90M does have armor.
It cannot do layers 2 & 3 well at all, even Ariete is far better than T-90M at not being hit by rounds or even shot at.
I think people are too focused on onion layer 4 and forgetting that the first 3 layers need addressing as well.
