I have had great success with playing Fox 1 users like the F18 and SU 27 at high altitude and firing missiles from above, but when I get a missile fired at me, unless it’s a Sparrow that can be easily evaded, I’m cooked. I have tried notching the enemy plane’s radar like I do to Fox 3 but with almost no success.
I would like to stop hugging the ground so much but missiles like the 27ER and basically any Fox 1 that is not a Sparrow are making me question whether I should stay at high altitude or not.
Fox 3 missiles can be evaded somewhat reliably, can the same thing be said about Fox 1? If so, any tips?
just go full notch and spam chaff, or turn around and go to the ground while moving a bunch to bleed missile energy
If you are like within 20 km from enemy launch and its a 27ER you may be cooked, so I would immediately dive.
Otherwise don’t fly straight into the battlefield, quickly fly straight whilst you get a lock on a enemy, launch your missile. Then go 45 degrees (not a full notch) so that you still maintain radar lock, and are ready to go full 90 degree if needed
turn 90 degrees to the aircraft thats locking you for a sparrow launch and spam some chaff and you should evade relavivley well
So, when it comes to full notches. Is it best to do basically Small S turns across the 90* point while dropping a large amount of chaff? (Like 20 chaff in a 1-2 second window)
Notch and drop chaff
Chaff only really works while notching at 90 to the incoming missile/radar - it is much less effective if you are flying towards or away from the attacker. 20x chaff is a bit excessive - probably 3-4 puffs of chaff - then wait - then another 3-4 - while notching.
If you have a fast missile (R-27) it is often better to get a return missile shot off and crank 45 degrees or so left for a second or two, right for another second or two, left again, all the while keeping a lock on them. You bleed the incoming missile of enough energy and you can often lose it kinetically without the need for chaff.
All the while, your attacker now has to weigh the choice of trying to keep you locked up for their rapidly slowing missile or firing another missile or evading your return shot.
If you have a slower missile then it is better to sometimes go cold - make them have to chase you and potentially get thwacked by another player in the process. In the 23ML I find that even doing a big lazy 360 turn will negate locks at longer ranges. Pointing your nose down for at least part of the turn will have the inbound missile going down (trying to intercept where it thinks you will be) and then losing a tonne of energy as it tries to climb again.
It’s a bit difficult to explain but there are a few YT videos (Defyn) where the mechanics are explained a bit better than in words.
R-27ER… you have to defend proactively and as early as possible, otherwise, there is no chance you will notch and chaff it in time in all but the absolute best platforms and even then… It might simply be too close.
Everything else, including most ARH, are fairly easy defend against at alt when done smartly.
Know your aircraft, some hate being too high. Tornado F3 for example. I routinely operate at 10k ft, but going much higher than that, it starts to struggle.
Pay attention to your RWR, if something seems to be looking at you, dont keep flying straight towards it. Angle your radar towards but fly as far off to one side as possible, if you need to defend you are already 1/2 to 2/3 the way in a notch already.
Pay attention to what is around you on radar, you can often force things onto the defensive before they can even fire at you.
Keep your speed up. True for all alts, but keeping your speed up helps a lot with kinematically defeating missiles.
Notch the radar if you still have time, notch the missile works in most conditions, and going full cold is a solution to everything which is not too close.
Fox3s are made to be TOOOOO notchable for gaijin doesn’t want to see high kill ratios
