Indonesian Naval Sub-Tree: Bhinneka Tunggal Ika!

Hello everyone! Today I would like to suggest the Indonesian Naval Sub-tree! This suggestion is created primarily to complement the already suggested Indonesian ground & Air Sub-tree suggestion.

The Indonesian Navy operated a wide variety of ships of differing origins, both from the West and the East, as well as plenty of differing future ships (domestic designs are primarily of modern origin). This suggestion currently has around 29 total ships, with 22 coastal ships, 5 bluewater ships as well as 2 submarines. Additional ships are also planned to be included in this suggestion in the future.

KRI / RI Ship Prefix?

the “RI” prefix is the old one and were only used up untill the 1960s, whereas the “KRI” is the modern ship prefix the Navy uses alongside “KAL” for smaller vessels. Generally both are interchangable but for this suggestion ships bearing the “RI” prefix can be determined as of older construction.

DISCLAIMER

  • It’s worth noting that warships (and Naval in general) are not my area of expertise, as such it’s very likely for me to make mistakes regarding to armaments, refits or the like. Additionally the rank of these vehicles are also not concrete and can be tiered up or down if needed. Generally the more “modern” ships are left out but that is not a rule this suggestion follows, some will be ommited, some don’t. Additionally some of the armaments (primarily ASMs) will be omitted for balancing reasons. Any suggestions for the placement, addition, or correction of ships would be highly appreciated!

A. Background

Details

The official history of the Indonesian Navy started on the 10th of September 1945, immediately following the start of the Indonesian National Revolution. The early Indonesian government established the Badan Keamanan Rakyat Laut (People’s Marine Security Agency) on 22 August 1945. The then-BKR laut equipment comprises of wooden ships, some landing crafts, and weapons left by Imperial Japan and its rank was comprised of Indonesian sailors with differing allegiances, namely of Dutch Navy, Imperial Japanese Navy sailors, active Japanese militiamen, and guerilla fighters against the aforementioned Japanese/Dutch forces. On october 5, 1945, BKR laut was reorganized into the Tentara Keamanan Rakyat Laut ( People’s Maritime Security) and then renamed to the Angkatan laut Republik Indonesia/ALRI (Indonesian Navy).

After the National Revolution, the Dutch transferred over a handful of their vessels, which ina addition with other ships given to or purchased around the same time, played a key role in suppressing regional rebellions. Once the nation is slowly recovering from the many different inner rebellion, the Navy started a new program known as Menuju Angkatan Laut yang Jaya (Towards A Distinguished Navy) which sees a variety of significant improvements to the Navy due to the politics of West Irian Dispute. Supported by the Soviets directly, as well as the addition of ships from the Eastern Bloc, the Indonesian Navy in the 60s is at its strongest.

After numerous operations of varying successes, the Indonesian Navy started a modernization for its fleet in 1980, as the Eastern Bloc ships of the 60s are inadequate in fulfilling the Navy’s task, and with the straining of relationship between the Soviet Union and Indonesia during the New Order signifies a pivot to western ships, namely of Western Germany, Dutch, South Korea and Australia. As well as obtaining East Germany’s ships after the German Unification. Around the same time, the Navy started a primarily non-combat military operations in the form of humanitarian service in various remote areas in Indonesia. Currently the Navy has started an expansion of its combat warships, with quite a lot of ships on order. One of which is the recently acquired Brawijaya class (Thaon di Revel) Frigate in 2025.

According to GFP (Global Firepower Index), Indonesia is considered as a top 15 global military power, being ranked 13th in 2025. Whereas IISS (The International Institute for Strategic Studies) in the Military Balance (2024) estimate that the Indonesian Armed Forces are the largest military in Southeast Asia. The Indonesian Navy has around 74,000 personnel, including Marines and Naval Aviation spread out in three fleets, namely East (Sorong), Central (Surabaya), & West (Jakarta), as well as two FOB at Kupang (West Timor) & Tahuna (North Sulawesi). The Navy operates around 280 active ships, whereas GFP reports the number at 331 total vessels.
