I’ve had this as well before. I think its more a latency issue. If you have high ping, sometimes it doesnt quite register as friend and doesnt update until a second sweep (I often find myself playing on US servers despite being in the UK just for more lobby choice, so 100 or so ping is quite common for me). Have had this more on older, “SRC” radars like those in the FGR2. Though not noticed it quite as much recently, but certainly have had this in the past.
Though it is still habbit of mine to not insta lock, and instead wait a few seconds before locking if time allows. Just to be on the safe side.
I only play on US servers so I don’t think it’s latency and I’m not the only person who’s mentioned this - not sure if its a bug or working as intended, targets will appear initially as enemy (|-|) and then once it sweeps a second time it will switch to friendly (=).
It is in SRC mode and maybe it only really happens in older models like the F-4.
Hmm, never seen that in my Phantoms, but then I have to admit I rarely use them in an AA role…
Currently I play the new F-5E in the Japanese Tree., and as the other 5E’s it lacks IFF alltogether. This obviously offers quite some challenges in Sim EC, where at 11.3 you’re one of the few aircraft with no IFF alltogether. But the challenge is also interesting!
All in all a fun bird, btw, that new Tiger II! With its four all-aspect AAM’s and it’s agility it is agreat dogfighter! Like it especially in Afghanistan where you can use the terrain to sneak up to the enemy (almost like back home in the Alps, haha!). I mostly rely on the RWR, and often use the radar just intermittently to not alert the enemies too much. = )
I still very much doubt this is true/a feature, if it were it would at least be consistent. If it’s “rare” it can probably be explained by something else which is rare, like the friendly firing a missile and you picking up that missile. In my 10.7 F4 with only a SRC mode it’s certainly not the case, targets are identified as friendly or foe in the first sweep. @PCPaulDPearl Can you get a clip of this?
Yep, I like a good challenge. I still have not unlocked an F5 yet, but looking forward to it.
Relying on RWR isn’t too bad, I tend to do that a lot in top tier currently. Usually when I fly the Gripen on a map that isn’t completely flat like Denmark I’ll have the radar off at least 85% of the time, with the newer RWR’s it’s gotten just as important to not give away your location as it is to keep your own radar on imo…
A map of the alps would be pretty sick. I grew up skiing there, mostly around the French region. Would be cool if they incorporated the area with Matterhorn and Mont Blanc, a 128km x128km map could easily fit both.
I’ll stream the next time I go into top tier sim, however, for me it wasn’t rare, it was consistent - it may not have been every target but it’s a lot - I think the way to recreate it is to make a turn so that you’re looking into a new area of the sky and then watch the targets - it’s most obvious when you’re just taking off after just joining (I assume because of the number of friendlies around).
Like I said I don’t play TT that often because I just don’t enjoy the meta very much.
Is that still really the case with the MiG-23 IFF? I’ve played it in the last few days a lot, and I could swear that the IFF works in MTI. IFF was recently added to the Sea Harrier for example. The PD Phantoms don’t have it in PD mode. That’s the most common reason for my team kills, I forget which modes in a certain plane doesn’t have IFF.
Doesn’t matter much. Thankfully, R27 is a POS, since I get shot at, at least, 3-4 times per sortie by blue Mig23s since GER is for some reason tossed into team with Soviets. :D You just need to realize you’re fighting 1 vs 31 deathmach.
Sea Harrier had the F-5E radar as a placeholder until last September when It finally got the correct blue fox radar which came with IFF
The Phantom FGR2/FG1 got IFF in PD mode in December I think. But it’s a tad fiddly to use. the IFF mark is at the top of the window, in-line with the target marker and not attached to the target like it is in other modes. Does mean that when you have a lot of targets it’s hard to tell who is who
Can’t comment for the other phantoms but I assume it’s the same
Now the replays have sensor info, look at the replays, and join the proper info in case of improper lock.
I guess most of the times people are locking a friendly dogfighting and enemy, and when the enemy gets killed, the misile switch target to the friendly
