If you could, how would you re-balance CAS in Ground Battles?

Skill based is the only ground I think you could get people to agree on, since thousands of hours and dollars have been invested on all sides with the purchase expectations being that there would be plenty of opportunity for air and ground to see combined action and gaijin would not want to have players skip the SPAA part of tech trees and only buy tanks for a ground only mode.

I’m sorry to say this but the only people who genuinely want a mode that is ground only are not only in the minority but everyone else including gaijin have financial interest in preventing that mode from being made. The game has been a combined air/ground game for ages atp and if that’s not what you wanted, playing the game in the first place was the original sin, not any perceived imbalance between air and ground.

A classic example is Germany’s Wirblewind and Ostwind next to Armerica’s M42.

The M42 is respectable as a multipurpose vehicle, but it takes a lot more skill to do well against air with it due to the low rate of fire and exceedingly exposed crew. The wirble and ostwind have enough gun shields to trade with incoming .50 caliber fire at 1000m, but as soon as the enemy can get within potential gun range, your gunner is at risk in the M42/M19A1 and if he dies the entire vehicle will be lost to that strafe. This was fixed slightly by adding in the most recent AA’s to US tech tree, but if you want to play 4.0, your SPAA options are 6x .50’s or 2x 40mms. Both decent but neither hit the sweet spot of the Wirblewind and minengeshot.

if gajiin would use the separate BR in ground and uptiered all of the OP US CAS at least + 1 BR the issue wouldnt be that great. Its disgusting that things like an A2D fights WWII spaa’s which are totally useless.
Otherwise Ground RB should be mixed battle - so OP CAS meets OP CAS.

I think the bigger issue is that the people complaining are expecting SPAA to do all the work for them, and don’t wanna put in the (minimal) effort of spawning CAP.

SPAA v.s CAS balancing is just a bad model. Warthunder should instead focus on CAP v.s CAS balancing.

I do agree. And to that effect, CAP should be cheaper than CAS. but there is another issue there where you may not actually have the air tree grinded to have any CAP available.

So either

A) they actually fill the gaps within the trees (something they claim they do all the time with C&Ps but ive yet to see any actual gaps filled) and add more SPAAs, that are generally better (and fix bug reports for exisitng SPAA so they actualy perform half well)

or

B) add NRB / SPAA style free vehicles for at least CAP as well. So you can always spawn in something.

Though there is another issue with both SPAA and CAP, which is… its dependent on someone actually spawning into CAS to use. Otherwise you are AFK. So perhaps some kind of mechanic to swap to SPAA or CAP when needed, but otherwise be in another ground vehicle (would propose for this that CAP is required to be on the airfield to switch, not just orbiting)

For open tops/vehicles with not as much armor, CAP can be as deadly as CAS.

12.7mm are enough to deal with Pz. IV for example.

Ckarkson was also mentioning Naval style spawning. It’s prolly the best solution here, idk what Gajin was smoking when they decided to add free stock vehicles.

Right?

and so because a 4.0 tank can be killed with guns, a Sea Harrier FA2 for example needs to cost the same amount as a dedicated CAS aircraft at 12.0? (or, with the stupid cost for A2A missiles, 10x the cost of an SPAA) even though it might not even have a gun to strafe a ground target

The logic that all BRs are the same and therefore everything should cost the same regardless of BR is one of hte biggest problems with how CAS is currently balanced.

For example, im of the opinion that unguided bombs shoudlnt even have an SP cost at the higher BRs (like 11.7/12.0+), because their performance is just so much lower than that of any other weapon at and around that BR and the ability to actually use them is greatly diminished. It would also give a single reason to ever actually use them over a guided equivalent (Which for some reason costs the same amount of SP currently)

No, i don’t wonna have to grind the Air tree to play ground mode without being swarmed by CAS

Hence, what we were discussing.

The game has very clearly been an air and ground combined battle system for a very very long time. If you don’t want to do it at all, playing the game in the first place was your mistake. I can understand wanting to identify specific things you have a problem with, but if you just flatly dislike the fundamental structure of the game, you shouldn’t be playing it at all imo.

For the same reason i think the gun pods on helicopters should be completely free. It’s already suicide to get within 1km of ground forces in most helis, might as well let me try with less risk.

Most of the CAS issue IMO stems from core gameplay / mechanic issues rather than the aircraft themselves, and little incentive to play AA. My short answer is the reward system needs a pretty big renovation, as well as the categorization of AA. Long in depth answer below.

Section 1 (tangent)
There is very little incentive to actually play AA, but obviously a flat increase in rewards wouldn’t really work with how easy it is to actually play AA. War thunder heavily incentivizes individual performance over teamwork (that’s a problem for a different thread), winning earns you literally nothing, so why bother protecting your team from CAS unless you’re grinding AA or are literally forced to? I mean sure just because it’s a noble thing to do, but realistically about 5% of the GRB player base cares about their teammates or winning, If no one cares about their teammates, and there’s no incentive to play AA, no one’s gonna play AA, which Leads into section 2.

Section 2 (My proposals for solutions)

A. There is one incredibly easy addition which wouldn’t solve CAS, but would help. INCREASE WIN REWARDS. Literally everyone has been asking for this FOREVER, a greater Incentive to Win means a greater incentive to want to keep your team alive, More people per game playing AA means better defense against CAS, really not that complicated.

B. As I mentioned previously, AA make straight buns rewards, It takes forever to spade AA, and you earn nothing for actually playing it, but a flat increase for a pretty braindead way of getting kills wouldn’t make a whole let of sense, due to this I propose we remove the category of “SPAA” for higher tier air Defense systems and Instead split them into sub Categories such as SHORAD’s (I.E the Type 93, LAV AD, or Stormer AD) Point Defense systems like literally any of the 5000 Gepard variants (and even certain long range systems like the SM SV), and Medium / Long range AA. Why?

Two major reasons. Reason One being it allows you to change the SP amount of Certain systems, like how the Tan Sam is the same SP as a sky Sabre. As much as I hate CAS, you do have to acknowledge the balance flaw in the fact that it takes about 56% of a nuke to spawn a CAS aircraft with a handful of guided munitions, but some shitter in a Buk can drop like 100 SP, fire all his missiles at you, and smoke you. I think different levels of SPAA should have Different spawn costs instead of being a flat Per BR rate.
Reason Two, I think SPAA Rewards should vary depending if you are fulfilling your role or not, For example, I think SHORAD systems should earn more RP, SL, and SP for shooting down helicopters, Point Defense Systems should earn more for shooting down incoming Munitions, while Long range systems earn more for shooting down fixed wing aircraft (possibly earn more for longer range kills?), as well as a slight increase across the board (except for SP).

C. Add more external Incentives. We already have one in game with the skill bonus, add a separate one for Aerial kills and Munition shoot downs, earn enough and you get a fat multiplier. Another Idea is to add something similar to the daily research bonus, Play AA for a Certain amount of time / get a certain amount of kills to earn a bonus multiplier, or just make it like a battle pass challenge, instead of battle pass points, you could get a flat amount of extra RP / SL, you could even apply this to other avenues in the game like SPG’s, light tanks for scouting, Base bombing etc.

D. Lower A2A spawn cost, Remember the Point I made about 56% of a nuke for a CAS Aircraft that gets countered by 100 SP? Same deal goes with A2A aircraft, I use the F-5E FCU at 11.7 Japan as my CAS / A2A aircraft, takes about 650 to spawn it with a set of 4 AAM’s, that is LUDICROUS for how easy it is to get shot down at the BR, ESPICALLY while in a dogfight, and how little you usually ever get to do in it, obviously this would have to be balanced per weapon type and per aircraft (especially in low BR’s) when “Fighter Aircraft” have extremely high pen / caliber guns, as well as strike aircraft such as the Rook or A-10 with literal Anti tank cannons strapped to them, but this allows for things like Heli’s with F&F Missiles to be reliably countered, as well as Aircraft with standoff munitions. A side bonus of this being it would become much easier to grind Aircraft that suck in normal ARB.

Section 3 (FInal thoughts and conclusion)

Looping back to the intro, I think the CAS Issue primarily stems from a crippling lack of incentive to actually play AA, as well as the heavy incentive on individual performance over teamwork Rather than the aircraft themselves. love or hate CAS, It’s integral to the game and has to be here, Without it helicopters become 100% useless, half the strike Aircraft in the game would be Completely useless, and we would miss out on a lot of really cool content, the focus on “fixing” CAS should be on focused the roots of the tree, not the branch.

If anyone would like me to make this a separate suggestions post for further discussion or poles, let me know and I’ll continue to add onto it as I get more Ideas / thoughts.

When i started playing the ground mode was ni where advertised as combined battles… because it’s called ground mode i expected ground vehicles, instead i also have to face planes… Besides, what if i want the (somehat) realistic gameplay of war thunder? If i just wanted tanks i would’ve went to WoT… but there isn’t another option, so I’ll voice my discontent regarding something which is essentially legalized cheating

OK but you played the game, saw planes, and stayed. That’s not anyone’s fault but your own.

If someone held a concert in a swamp but didn’t advertise there would be 5 foot deep mud, would you just keep standing in it and demand the band shovel the mud away while you sink in it?

And I get that there’s CAS that’s annoying but the topic is more nuanced than the lowest common denominator of players who flat-out refuse to play in a way that is competitive and then demand to nerf anything that is competitive. It’s just not a fruitful line of discussion.

I stayed because there are no other options, i okay on playstation so most things aren’t available, if there was i would’ve changed… Besides i adapted, i also played CAS saw how mind boggling easy and boring it was and stopped also because i have no interest in planes. It’s not my fault that i don’t have an option for a tank game that has realistic physics and no planes

I haven’t seen any evidence that AA spawns need to be incentivized. At any BR, getting a kill with an aircraft is like a 99% chance the next thing to spawn will be an SPAA/SAM or fighter. if a team just refuses to spawn AA, then they would just rather lose than play AA. teams already choose to lemming rush shermans into narrow streets against king tigers and we don’t breadcrumb points to get them to try reading the map or flanking, why do we need to coach them to something as simple as “pick the right vehicle for your team’s needs”?

personally i would say

  1. delete the sp cost discount for scouting with light vehicles
  2. make sp cost dependent on ordinance loaded (tv guided as a group / laser guided / gnss guided / unguided / ammo belts )
  3. make spaa better against air specifically as it is now they are just annihilating tanks (better rewards and easier to do)
  4. make rewards for killing air targets at least the same as killing a ground target to make aa actually look up for once

or nuclear option of giving people an uncombined queue type so they actually get to enjoy open top vehicles without getting annihilated by aa and cas

I have to call you out on this because you are actually just not being honest at all. You have only just barely managed to pull a positive K/D on a whopping 2 planes in the whole game and that K/D is about as well as you do on ground. You literally have no idea what you are talking about when you say “cas is easy” because you aren’t even capable of doing well with it yet. At least not any better than you do with literally anything else.

I get it, you want to play without having to worry about planes, but you fundamentally do not understand even half of this game yet.

Again, That’s only a portion of the Issue, A lot of AA literally cannot counter a large chunk of aircraft standoff munitions, especially at the middle range of high br like 11.7, which is why I think strictly A2A aircraft should be significantly cheaper. As well as the issue of most people don’t STAY in AA after getting their revenge kill, or if they do, they usually just ripple fire their remaining missiles until they run out, and than J out.
