How feasible would it for Gaijin to add both of those?
For example, the F-16 irl has a two axis autopilot, I don’t think it’d be hard for Gaijin to just model in “fly in straight line” to a few toptier jets.
Lets extend a bit: the runways have, although not functional, PAPI/VASI lights. How feasible how it be for Gaijin to add functionality for those too?
Why?
The maps are waaaaay too small to really need auto-pilot in any meaningful form, but it would be good to get the ability to set nav markers on the map, that displayed both in the cockpit (where appropriate) and in third person (in RB). Would be useful for some maps for setting up low level loft attacks or naving back to an airfield. This could also then be incorporated into a proper lofting mechanic that would give you the basic guidance information needed for said attack (i.e, when to pull up, and by how much)
Now that you said it, that’s unfortunately true, BUT it could be useful for sim players – even if the topic was marked as “realistic battles”…
Auto pilot and ILS would help me land in sim without breaking my landing gears and help me find the runway :D
Yeah, even then, the maps are too small to be of major use, sure Terrain following radar would be funny in a Tonka, especially if we got low level weather again like the fog. But pretty niche.
Weren’t there extremely foggy maps in simulator battles? I’ve seen a petition or two for Gaijin to remove fog from the game
We had them briefly, I didnt mind them, but this was back when everyone just flew low to exploit MP and people didnt like the idea of having to notch. Though I will admit it made landing on some maps virtually impossible.
PAPI and VASI lights are not too unfeasable and should be relatively simple to add. Other things like a fullfledged ILS system with all the radio beacons would be both too complex to add and on many maps useless without an IAP chart.
Concerning AFCS… we don’t really need that. Yes for Sim it could be useful since you could tell the game where to fly you to but its kinda unncessary since we have SAS.
One thing that could be added to make landings easier on maps with low clouds and low visibility in general is SVS, EVS or maybe even CVS. PAPIs only get you so far when you literally can’t see 300 meters in front of you.
Working (not to mention, BRIGHTER) PAPI/VASI/ALS lights would be the single biggest QoL update for SB, like ever. This, alongside aircraft lights would be so good as far as QoL goes.
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had to guesstimate where the runway was through low, dense cloud cover (conveniently, always right as I descend towards the airfield…) just to eat a tree or rock :/
I know that in the game war thunder the effectivity of PAPI lights could be exaggerated to make them visible through dense clouds.
The thing is in real life these are mainly meant to establish ones glide path in VMC conditions in day and/or night. As soon as you get into IMC these become very hard to make out and you have to follow some sort of radio guidance in order to get within range to see them.
I myself have flow in S-VFR conditions (min 800m visibility) and I could not make out the PAPI until I was like .8 NM out from the runway. Tbf it was my first time in those conditions XD
Isn’t that what “Instructor” does?
Feasible? Easlily.
Useful? Have you seen the way most people land in WT?!?
While we dont have these specifically, we do have Approach lighting systems:
Pictured: F4U-4 forward slipping to land
its something at least. They are kinda too dim tho
Very good, now do sequenced flashing lights for when conditions are terrible
Easy enough, I think?
Its kinda a shame that this kinda of thing wasnt done with the AF overhaul relatively recently
