How do the flaps "work" on the La-5Fn? How are they best used in a 1 vs 1 fight?

Hello (SB-thread)!

On a Lark, i decided to sign up for a thingy involving La-5Fn on La-5Fn violence - mostly driven by curiosity and wondering how such events are performed than anything really.

I’ve flown the La-5Fn, but never extensively (the frontal visibility is off-putting), but have fought them fairly often.

As such, I’m wondering: How are you supposed to use the flaps on this one? The effects don’t obvious in the way the fw190 flaps, P-51C/mustang Mk Ia or P-38 flaps are and yet the primary advice I was given for how to duel with La-5Fn was “use flaps.”

Video at the end mentions “vertical separation effect”/flying under the enemy in the scissors.

Seems I’d misunderstood “fly under the enemy” from other videos I’d watched (I thought it was “keep your nose under the enemy’s nose and tilt your plane so it’s kind of pointing less up”). So having that bit clarified alone is a thanks.

So I suppose “La-5Fn flaps aren’t /special/ like P-38. Instruction to “use flaps” is more of a general advice then.”

I do wonder what exactly the “vertical separation effect” mentioned is though.

Last I remember, the LaFn was a great plane but really nose heavy

When in a rolling scissor , you never want to bury your nose deep

because it was going to be really hard to pull it up

Engine was good and acceleration a little slow because of the big nose.

Combat flaps coming up, clean going down

Take off near the top at low speeds
