I have top tier I every branch of the game and I personally agree. I find modern vehicles unfun to play. The original cut off of 1953 is OK to be e, tended a bit, maybe to the 60s but otherwise its sad to see the mid and lower tiers never get content any more
Still this is 4 years after launch.
By that time we already had a player, tanks were already established
Both the research method and economy got overhauled.
That already wasn’t the “roots” of war Thunder.
It kind of was when WT was at its worst in terms of vehicle Implementation.
By 2016 we had the first glimpse of Hope but it was far cry from the improvements we had from late 2018 onwards. This is what you want back?
Half-baked implementations?
It kind of has. Except for new trees I’m playing the same ww2 tanks I had 8+ years ago because they rarely addw anything that’s not top tier anymore. And if they do it’s often a copy paste from another tree or if it’s something the tree needs its made an event vehicle or premium. But even those are few between. Now you can get entire updates 3 months apart with nothing in existing trees that’s not top tier.
Wouldn’t say it lost its roots but something definitely changed.
The game feels more mainstream and more fotm centered. If you’re not playing meta vehicles/nations you’re often meat and that’s it. It actually sucks to lose an entire session or evening because my team left early or you’re being steamrolled by the endless stream of pancake tanks and leopards.
Something that I remember from 2014 when the tanks came into the game is that i never felt any disappointment or even rage when i lost most games.
It was just playing for fun which has turned into a playing to unlock in order to get the best stuff.
Seriously so many games are decided in sometimes as little as 3 minutes.
This is the moment when you get spawncamped by tanks. Eat missiles from helicopters or bombs from planes in your own spawnzone.
This is where the game went wrong. IIRC gaijin themselves were aware of all the problems that could arise when we go modern. Today I sometimes think that they’ve given in too easily to all the vehicle suggestions by the community and they still to. They should have kept their own pace.
I meant you can still play props in regular battles. Nobody is forcing you to play airplane you just unlocked.
However, they are occupied with a percentage who just see low and mid BRs as unwanted grind and play accordingly since their goal is the highest tier which is for a new player is a very long way.
There has been a noticeable evolution of the matches and now appear to be reduction in positions on maps (this a low/mid thing too?) and a heck of a lot of very low experienced players at BRs you would think out of their depth.
There is something to the OP opinion. Game is “longer” than ever, modern style vehicles still play the same format/maps as pre WWII (Ground modes), many players not liking earlier BRs (so up to abouf 8.0) sleepwalk through these BRs (player performance effects the game, sleepwalkers mess with efficiency/performance).
Depends on modes, Naval obviously not included as existed since Modern Thunder.
strayed from what the game originally was meant to be? yes, this isn’t just a ww2 dogfight game anymore
lost what they were trying to do with making a combined arms MMO with more choices in vehicle than any one could exhaust? not in the slightest
I don’t enjoy modern because ATGMs from kilometres away from a premium heli camping at their base takes away from what I enjoy but I prefer the option to play with those options of gameplay to be there if I wanted to play with that if I wished
The players ruined the game- at least for the original player base
It was originally a game for history enthusiasts, and the game design reflected that
As the game became more popular, it drew a wider, more general, “normie” audience. This audience wasn’t as interested in military history, they just wanted a cool fun fast-paced tank shooter with all the cool modern vehicles. To cater to this audience, Gaijin increasingly rushed for ever more modern vehicles, and gameplay consistently shifted from the historical battles of the past to boring, repetitive, and honestly generic gameplay we have today. The focus on historically accurate vehicles shifted to more generic “balanced” models with fictionalized performances, armaments, or even existences, because the new playerbase sees this game as a shooter and not a simulator, so of course Gaijin needs to make up stuff so their nation can be competitive.
Long story short, it’s not malicious activity by Gaijin that has changed War Thunder. They are simply attempting to cater to and profit off the game’s evolving playerbase. A playerbase that continues to warp War Thunder, with cries to remove CAS, add ever more modern missiles (“just nerf their performance so it’s balanced!”), remove historically operated vehicles because “copy-paste”, add more wacky prototypes, buff/nerf vehicles for “balance” and give more subtrees so [x-nation] can have [meta vehicle] and stay “competitive”.
Modern players ruined the game. We have players who complain about flying… In an aircraft game… Think about that… 🤦♂️
Gaijin prioritized the complaints from the least interested players in this game, and they responded. Now we have what is mostly a vehicle collector sim. Where gameplay takes a backseat to new toys every update.
I prefer most Cold War over WWII, and Most WWII over Top teir, for ground that is. For air, it’s Cold War over Modern, and Modern over WWII/WWI. I’d say, for the most part no, there are just too many options and not enough spacing, too many cheaters and such at top teir that makes it not fun.
It’s the Nostalgia that gets you probably, I only started during the Hot Tracks update in 2020, so I don’t have that early game Nostalgia, but I do think some of it is bad.
“Did modern vehicles ruin the game” Yes
It also led to the game having more players than it ever did or would.
That’s just untrue. If anything it’s notable that the devs seem to make sure we do consistently get more WWII stuff with each patch.
compared with the amount of top tier stuff its hardly matched. for every nation to get a ww2 vehicle you have to wait about a year and a half.
because otherwise events mostly make up for the addition of new ww2 vehicles. and I really despise gaijin for that
Absolute rubbish. If you don’t include new trees being added Germany is the only nation that gets some what regular ww2 vehicles. The skink for Britain was the first ww2 British tank added in something like 4 years for eg.
What if I like Gen’1 jets such as F-2 Sabre and Hunter F.1 but, Gaijin made them unplayable in AAB and ARB because of implementing of super sonic jets and AAMs? I need to leave from the game until Gaijin fix BR compression and matchmakers?
Yeah, some modern jets are actually fun but, was that really necessary in the game?
If Gaijin implemented a modern vehicle without breaking the existing one, it would not be a problem, but they could not even do that.
If they could not balance them, they should not have been implemented in the game.
Gameplay works. Counter Strike hasn’t changed in 20 years.
And the gameplay improvements over the last decade of War Thunder are what make me enjoy every game mode.
Alright, let’s take a look at all the WWII-and-earlier vehicles added in the past two-and-a-bit years (2022/23/24). I’m even excluding stuff that didn’t make it to completion until after the war (Battle-class destroyers, Centurion Mk 2, etc).

I too prefer the “older” vehicles and gameplay, but . . . all WT players like different things, so more variety is a good thing. I started 10 years ago when it was just planes, the addition of tanks was cool too tho. And I even had a blast playing Naval CBT. I still mainly fly, Air AB 4.3 - 4.7 mostly, because that is my “funzone” and where I do my Battle Pass tasks most of the time. Tanks I play AB as well 4.7 - 6.3 mostly, but sometimes as high as 7.7 - 8.3. Naval I play RB and enjoy the Bluewater more now, since I have gotten more big ships and I find that part more to my liking. From all that, you can figure I go up to early Cold War and that’s about it. I have a ton of the high tier stuff, just no desire to use it. I just don’t see the “game” part of BVR and automated weaponry . . . but that’s just me. Gaijin is a business, they need to earn money to keep the wheels turning. Modern stuff has been marketed hard, and added in a lot these past few years. It’s fine, it’s there for those that enjoy it and for those that are not as excited to play it, there is still a TON of other things to play. I don’t care what mode/Rank/BR others play . . do what is fun for you. If I find you on my team, I’ll help you as best I can, if you are on the red team . . Imma shoot you. . . . ez pz . . keep it simple. It’s a game . . . have fun. However that works for you
Modern tank lack soul
i also hate the way you have to play them. You have to sit back and wait till someone else gets bored and exposes themselves. Otherwise you get instantly snipped and spotted thanks to LRF and thermals
That would only be a fair comparison if you also listed the number of “modern” vehicles added in during the same time period. Going back say the last 10 major Updates and barring the Battle Pass vehicles, I think the numbers would speak for themselves. Many Updates only have 1 or 2 WW II era vehicles added in. And if you take away the “sub tree” additions(which are generally about 50/50 anyway) it’s not hard to see modern era vehicles have been a priority. Granted, a good deal of WW II era vehicles have already been added, but by no means has it been “fleshed out”. But again, I concede, it’s clearly a business decision. Marketing has clearly been towards a younger target group the past few years, and it’s safe to say they are less interested/knowledgeable with WW II era vehicles than with the more modern stuff, so it makes sense. But it’s by no means hard to see where the priorities lie
