9Ms tend to be mediocre when in rear aspect if the guy you are shooting at is paying attention, so side aspect is usually the best choice if you have it, on both clips (which is kinda hard to tell cuz its sensor view) i do lead it, especially on the f14 one the missile when being fired is already going where the mig29 was going to be, it just gives up and goes forwards then blows up, if i had a 9L on either of those shots it would have hit, since neither flared
That isnt anything to do with the seeker though. Only how the IRCCM works.
Its much harder to defeat the IOG in side-aspect than it is in rear-aspect. But if no flares are dropped and the seeker shutoff never triggers, then the 9M is identical to the 9L. (though it should have a greatly increased lock range, which then helps with the tracking too. The Track rate can also be buffed)
Its outside test drive aswell, as shown in the bug report, i just put this one here because i thought it showed what i meant better, the LSZ thing you mentioned is true, ill try to fire only inside of it from now on see if it still happens, but AIM-9s after the B,E and J are pretty long range fox 2s, (compared to R-73s, R60s and so on), i think the L,G and M all have similar range so even when i change between them, they all feel the same, aside from the flare resistance ofc, its just the 9M that gives me issues lately
Yeah, they were just talking about flaring the 9M, thats why i mentioned launching it in side aspect
Only thing I will say is that replays dont always show flares, you’ll need to check the server side version, as I think you are on the client side version
https://warthunder.com/en/tournament/replay
The first shot isnt entirely clear what happened, but the second looked an aweful lot like the seeker shutoff was triggered.
So Id double check the replays using the replay from the link above.
Yeah i think it has to do with the seeker shutoff, but i can guarantee they did not flare, i still remember the matches, the Su-27 didn’t know i was there and the Mig-29 i assume just didn’t see it cuz it was GRB, that’s why on the bug report i put it has the IRCCM not turning back off since the missile just goes forwards, then either falls out of the sky or blows up, but just incase ill try to check the server replays.
Hmm… I’ll keep an eye out, but if it happens again, check the server side replay
Just checked, no flares, can’t really explain how it even happens, thanks for the fast replies tho
There was an issue at the start of the year with 9Ms going AWOL
But it was fixed. But I wouldnt be surprised if it returned again
Yeah that second video is exactly the same thing as the ones i sent! I just can’t find a way to replicate it, i also tried to find similar bug reports to mine, but theres none, it seems the 9M works fine for everyone else
There is this one for before, but it never got accepted and the issue was resolved.
But Gaijin breaks things all the time

I tried a report too back then, but it too never got accepted

Really hope some attention can come to this, since in some planes (like the PoBit) you only have 9Ms, not 9Ls, missing easy shots like that is tragic
all aspect lock is within 2.1 KM for the mig-15. it was not in range.
even if it isn’t in range it would just go forwards to where the mig 15 was, not steer of into the left to the point where the entire planes leaves the missile FOV, i can guarantee that if i could see the replay of that test drive, the missile would have track on that Mig 15 the whole time, again just watch the other videos in the bug report
It’s possible that is what is going on in the clip linked in the original post. But Im not entirely convinced of that answer. Though it doesnt explain the clips in OPs bug report (Su-27SM at sub 3Km and Mig-29M within 2km. Though I think the second clip, the one vs the Mig-29M might just be a bad shot, rather than necessarily the missile breaking, but its really hard to know either way.)
Aim-9Ms have a well known track record of just going AWOL with no explanation and no consistant means of replication. Was fixed before, but they have been playing around with missiles in the past few weeks (prox fuse changes) and it would not be unlike them to end up somehow breaking it again.
The IOG might kick in and hte missile just keeps going to where the contact would be in an attempt to reacquire, but it does seem to overpull rather than maintaining its initial turn for that
here, exact same shot, down to angle, speed and enemy but 9L this time
after some testing, it seems the 9M turns on its IRCCM for seemingly no reason, and then reacquires (or tries) the mig 15, i’ve had some shots where its still in the missiles fov, so it starts tracking again, and other times where it isn’t and just blows up a few seconds later like in the video above, you can see it while holding U to watch the missile go, the camera stops tracking the mig 15 for a second, all shots were done at 5.9 km and as soon as the mig 15 starts turning, i tried the same thing with the 9L and it never missed
another one, just a normal ARB match, it seems to happen whenever u fire the 9M with a radar lock before hand. (i do these to avoid firing it at flares by mistake)
Affirmed! I tested it on the AV-8B Plus. Same weird result.
Second missile without radar lock hits properly.
Has nothing to do with this topic. IR missiles seem to be bugged since a hour or so.
How are they tracking direction changes now through non stop flares, somehow the iog is constantly updating with perfect accuracy when the seeker should be off
