I directly mentioned the F-86 and F-104, however it’s the same for most rank 5s.
Out of these 19 planes from 7.0-9.0, 18 can carry A2G ordinance.
Out of those 18, three have ballistics computers, and three have bomb sights (which are highly inaccurate at high speeds).
Out of 18 planes that can carry A2G ordinance, 15 have basically no way to deal with radar SPAA, including multiple ground attack aircraft.
In the specific example of the Harrier, it only has 5 hardpoints, so taking 9Gs limits you to only a few zunis or HVARs plus a single 500lb bomb. Considering its atrocious turnrate and heat signature, and its limited payload, I doubt it would cause much issue.
Of course, if it does, it can always just be raised.
I’m not gonna complain that the enemy team has a way to kill me if I use a OP spot or tank. I’ve gotten near 20 kill games in the Kv-7 that were only halted because someone had CAS.
I had a video of it at some point, however Fim-92s have no trouble locking onto a pre-flaring Harrier with its engine off.
If the strongest CAS get moved up along with the Gepards, then all that will be left at 8.3 is either planes with terrible payloads (like the F-86) or planes with terrible flight performance (like the F3D). Aside from facing vehicles 40 years more advanced, 7.0-8.0 planes also just don’t have really good payload options.
America was still using Skyraiders into the Vietnam war.
So, higher than the actual Abrams on an actual Abrams hull?
