Tiger II H was pretty lackluster turret armour, atrocious mobility and weak side armour. It’s mostly carried by the excellent gun, but that’s not unique to this vehicle and can be found on lower BR’d vehicles.
It’s fine for 6.7, but it nowhere near the best heavy tank in the game, let alone best tank period.
The turret armor is weakish, but even at it’s own tier there are still a decent variety of guns that can’t pen it without non-APHE ammo, most notably the American short 90. Plus it’s a deceptively tricky shot to make at range if the Tiger knows to waggle the turret, owing to the black hole conical mantlet.
Side armor’s not that bad either, you can bait people with it pretty reliably by “overangling”, if you need to. It’s certainly very vulnerable if you get caught side on (Or if they catch your turret side while aiming at someone else), but apart from the overall size that’s not a unique issue to the Tiger II.
And that gun cannot be undersold. It’s not just the best gun on any heavy tank at the BR, it’s one of the best guns tier for tier in the game, IMO. Great velocity, great pen, good filler, and all without the cripplingly slow reload of other heavy tank guns at the tier. It is technically available at a lower BR, but only on extremely limited platforms (Nashorn has no armor and no gun depression, Waffentrager has even worse mobility than the Tiger, VFW is a plane magnet).
You have to play it carefully, owing to the lacklustre mobility. Plus, it’s lineup isn’t the best any more, since it seriously lacks for versatility, and German teams really can be something in this BR range.
But I’d gladly take it over most other 6.7 heavies in most circumstances.
KV-1E should be upped up as well. The amount of armor that has for the BR is absurd. I found myself and 5 of my teammates trying to kill it from all around, and we all somehow ended up dying (primarily from other vehicles, but wouldn’t have happened if we could’ve just killed it a bit quicker. I think 4.7 to 5.0 is a good change.
Same thing for the ZiS-30. The gun (140mm+ is insane for 2.3) is absurdly good for its BR. it’s still effective even 3 BRs up, and it’s incredibly small. Armor is also so thin that APHE doesn’t trigger. I think around 4.0 is a solid tier.
KV-1E absolutely needs to be uptiered. I killed one earlier in the VII and the ONLY reason I managed to do so was because the guy didn’t know how to kill a churchill and went unangled sideon to me to try and get around me. Only bad players lose to a churchill in a KV.
brother you can coax it to death. Also the gun is the only good thing about it. It’s a worse PVKVII
Whilst I agree the KV-1E is likely in need of an uptier, it can’t do so really right now, given that at 4.7 you’ll find the KV-1 ZiS-5, and at 5.0 there’s the KV-85. It is not better then either of these.
Decompression, like in most cases, is the best answer.
The previous person was arguing the Tiger II is ‘‘babyproof’’ and you’re now talking about keeping the turret moving at all times, which is something 95% of Tiger II players don’t do.
You can easily just wait a second for them to turn the turret even slightly and overmatch the sides that slope inwards.
I’ve got in my Italian M26A1 which largely faces German Jagdtigers, Ferdinands, Tiger II H’s, Tiger II P’s and Jagdpanthers, and I’m currently on a 70% winrate and 5 - 1 K/D ratio.
The 90mm really doesn’t struggle with German heavies all that much.
Refer to the video linked above.
I’m talking about the turret side armour of the Tiger II by the way, the fact that it slopes as it does it what makes it so weak.
I don’t think a reload buff is necessary for it to be usable at 6.0… I’ve already said that it’s quite literally meta for SQB – a gamemode that is very similar to GRB.
Most SQB ground vehicles that are meta are also good in GRB. There are little to no exceptions to that.
There’s a reason why M1A2 is used at 12.0 and not the T-80U-E1 or the Challenger 3TD. Do we have to dispute why the M1A2 is good in GRB too?
There’s a reason why the Tiger II H SLA is used at 6.7 instead of T34, or T26E5, etc…
Do we have to dispute why the Tiger II H SLA is good in GRB too?
Well, I think that’s more of a decompression issue than the KV-220 being uniquely bad at 6.0.
It clubs everything <6.0 but gets clubbed by 6.7s and 7.0s.
It’s like with the KV-8. The KV-8 struggles to kill the Excelsior (which is just 0.3 BRs higher than it), but I don’t think the KV-8 should go down to 3.0 or 2.7 because its armour would be too good and the gun on it is good enough to club most tanks at 2.7 - 3.0.
Well, I was basing it off of your tank’s orientation rather than what your gunner view / commander view appears your tank to be angled at.
If perfectly angled, the T-34-85’s hull armour can only stop M62 at >300m distance:
Beyond M62, it’s practically useless unless you use its engine as armour or use sidescraping.
The turret armour is somewhat trolly but can’t really be relied on.
Its survivability is definitely worse than the KV-220 because the crew isn’t as spaced out, so hits to the turret / corner of hull won’t immediately kill all crew members.
There is also turret bustle ammo on the T-34-85 as first stage, which means most shells (especially AP shells) can just kill it in one shot via ammo detonation:
The real reason why the T-34-85 is really good at 5.7 is because of the good gun, good mobility (like you said), and good gun handling. The armour is somewhat usable but only in certain situations.
The better mobility is nice but the reverse speed is worse than the KV-220’s.
The turret rotation speed is better, that is true.
Yes, the smoke grenades help a lot.
The 75mm can kill higher BR tanks but it is generally worse than BR-365 in downtiers / side-shots because of its inability to kill things in one-shot nearly as easily.
Unless they are stupid or you are in simulator battles, this isn’t really a good point to bring up 😅
The KV-220 gets much better survivability and armour to make up for these drawbacks, so I think that’s fair.
The gun is good enough in most cases (especially side-shots). It’s not like the potato gun of the 75mm Jumbo, that can’t even pen side-shots half the time.
Again, the KV-8 shouldn’t move lower because it can’t pen things frontally 0.3 BRs higher.
Maybe we should move up other vehicles instead.
Yeah that would be quite annoying 😂
I think the Black Prince is also quite good (contrary to what ULQ_Lover says), but they’re both fine at 6.0.
It gets APDS, faster reload, and smoke grenades… for worse survivability, post-pen damage, and much worse mobility. I think that’s a fair trade-off.
K/D is different to KPS.
If we go by K/D for his Tiger II H SLA, it would be 23.3 kills per death.
And that’s when the M4A3 (105) was 2.7 I presume (not sure how ‘old’ you’re talking about), against much lower level players than what the Tiger II H SLA would go up against.
Thing is, only 2 of the crew members are outside, and barely any of it is protruding the armor. The other two are inside, so you do need to use your main cannon. However, if they managed to hit first, they would have another chance.
