the mig19s can take s5 rocket pods to act as flares, and they supposedly work pretty well for most people, but not me for some reason
obviously I don’t fly into missiles when i can, but there are some cases where you simply have to, and when those situations arise i find that i can’t actually rely on my ‘flares’
for example when a lighting f6 popped up on my six 2.5 km away and shot a red top at me while i was going 600 at 5k meters i cut throttle, spammed my 16 rockets away and did a little bit of a scissor motion and the red top tracked no problem
heck even aim9bs and es have went through my flares
I’m not very experienced with rocket pod flaring, but I think it can work only in certain aspect directions and with your afterburner off.
Rocket pod flaring was super inconsistent for me, so I prefer to not let things pop up close behind me in the first place.
Most situations where I got rocket pod flared was when we’re both slow, and the enemy is showing me a bit of his side profile.
You have to wait till the afterburner is off completely before shooting the rockets.
Go into a slightly turn, shoot rockets and neg G immediately, so you gain max distance between you and the rockets. If you do not some missiles relock on you, especially 9Bs.
Below 1km rockets don’t work most of the time.
But in a Mig-19 most of the time you don’t need rockets. Only for All Aspect missiles. You can outrun R-60s, 9Bs, Shafrir 2.
With enough speed you can outturn all other missiles, if you go into a turn before enemy shoots. 9Ds for example loose their lock at more than 90°.
All this becomes more and more difficult the higher you fly.
