Well… helis go a few hundret kmh faster then drones usualy go… so thats that. And also without a warhead you would need to hit the rotors and then u need to have a heavy drone to do dmg wich again will be a slow drone.
Like in WT… the drones are slow but kinda heavy. Getting a Heli kill with these drones is actually pretty hard to do and often a waste of valuable time u spend trying.
Well, scout drone in war thunder is ZALA 421-16EM
So it weights just under 2kg. It could cause some damage to helo, depending what and where it will hit, main blades, I doubt it would drop it instant like it does, but tail rotor doesnt need big damage, so I would assume hitting tail would be more efficient.
And using Orion or Predator would cause total damage in blades…
Predator is over 500Kg empty, so I would assume Orion is somewhere quite near that
All this reasoning on realism are always fun to read warthunder is not realistic its a game ad so it should balanced as such. Hitting an heli with a drone is not easy sayin g otherwise is pure cope an so you should be rewarded with a kill (this also remove the crew lock), the same should be with any cannon just because it feal miserable to strike an heli/ plane with a 120 and only get a critical hit (realistic goblin be like but actualy a uranium penetrator hitting that part hit noting so no kill) dont care is not fun, the same can be sayed to hitting someone with a bomb just to recive an hitmarker caused by random geometry of the map
So you say, hitting helo or a plain with apfsd should always score a kill?
Why should it? There is no explosive filler in dart. It’s not 120mm diameter, it’s a long 2-3cm wide stick of doom not boom , so it really needs to hit some critical components, or pilot to be 100% quaranteed kill.
This is where example abrams crew uses that multipurpose round, to deal with helos.
And yes, I’m actually against that scout drone vs helo in WT , or make it that you need to hit tail rotor for disabling the helo.
Holy gamer vid.
Yeah drones crashing you is a real thing, some people even send them over into heli spawns which is even worse considering I’ve been crashed upon barely taking off and starting to gain speed.
Also this topic got derailed by ground purists really fast didn’t it
I usually have little sympathy however it’s clear you are putting in a lot of effort simply to be put to an end by someone trolling you with a drone with next to no effort required.
Regardless it’s a very real strat to deal with a very real problem, so if you want to nerf this then you must also in some way nerf helicopters to make up for the spike in efficiency they will receive.
Also, your modded crit and kill messages are hilarious.
Now, onto the actual topic.
Is it annoying? Absolutely. Should something be done about it? That’s trickier to answer. On one hand, it’s a legitimate IRL tactic to tackle helis when adequate LOS for SPAA or general AA is unavailable or impossible. On the other hand, a tiny drone made of like 80-90% styrofoam with no attached ordinance is very unlikely to do any kind of significant damage to an aircraft when ramming it, especially hard reinforced metal parts moving at high speeds like propellors.
Now if it got sucked into a jet intake, that’s a whole other matter. However, such instances are impossible in WT.
If we are to go the route where that stays, then the drones need to be nerfed where ground vehicles only get one per match so if you decide to jihad it into an aircraft, then there goes your airborne recon for the match, imho. If we are to adjust it, then imho we’d need another drone type for ground vehicles that has ordinance for taking down helis, and you have to choose between either that one or the scout drone before spawning, as the scout drone would be fixed and nerfed to where it can’t do that.
What needs fixing, is don’t make it count as a collision crash and thus crew lock the victim. Make it count as a real kill so the clever boy doing it gets kill credit and the victim doesn’t get a crew lock.
I do agree that something should be done about the crew lock after being rammed by a recon drone, but I disagree that something should be done about being able to be rammed by a recon drone, its a real tactic, and it is possible that a drone despite the size can critically damage important things on a helicopter, like the rotor and tail rotor.
I think it’s fair if the helicopter receives engine damage(not sure how they are modelled), lets say light orange, to simulate rotor damage upon first impact. A second impact kills the engine. Again I have no idea how helis are modelled.
Yup its very hard to do well in rocket helis. A good 30-40% of my deaths are from drone rams, team kills, clipping into invisible objects, etc etc. I play like this out of my love for helicopters, not to pad my KD. Its very very difficult and has taken me over 300 hours to get to a point where new helis I unlock I can go positive in them overall, even with all the bs.
