if it gets put in italy, mig-21 lancer could be 12.0/12.3
but also tornado ADV already performs well at 12.0 imo, at least if you ignore the current compression issues from 12.3-13.3

The F-104S ASA/M is not really the answer. It only used AIM-9Ls and later improved variants of the AIM-9L family, such as the L/I and L/I-1, but no SARH missiles, since the Aspide capability had already been removed by the ASA/M stage. And honestly, the F-104 is already painful enough to play, so another one probably wouldn’t help much.
After the F-104, the ItAF basically relied on the Tornado ADV and later the F-16 ADF for air defence.
Italy also operated a few F-16B Block 10s, but those were standard two-seaters rather than ADF aircraft, so they wouldn’t really fill the gap either.
If you want something genuinely different between the F-104 and F-16 in the Italian tree, you probably have to use and/or hope for a Hungarian or Romanian aircraft/subtree addition. There simply isn’t much else from the Italian Air Force itself that fits that slot.
the problem of 11.7 one armament. i will definetly be comfortable with an f104 if it has bot guns and sparrows at 12.0-13. without aspide of course its meaningless. it could be foldered nicely.
edit: maybe it could fit nuclear thunder too, not sure
ASA/M being added in the place of the ASA and the ASA getting the Aspide Mk.2 with the ARH seeker could be pretty interesting

Not that big of a problem imo, air RB BR gaps don’t matter much.
As for planes there could be F-104S.ASA-M, yeah, but with a very specific gameplay, only limited to aerial combat (on the other hand it should be easier to balance without base bombing).
Other than that there could be: Romanian MiG-21s LanceR (A, B, C), although they will also be a tough planes for some since they are underpowered in terms of engine thrust (they were made from MFs, not from bis), plus unfortunately Gaijin is allergic to Romanian vehicles coming to the regular tree for some reason.
Other than that, there could be F-16B of early blocks (1, 5, 10).
