F4J Phantom II - It needs a BR drop

Even against 12.3 and some 12.7, the phantom isn’t completely outclassed. You still have up to 6 AIM-7F’s and HMD.

The 12.0 US phantoms are one of the few planes that don’t suffer much in full uptiers, that says a lot.

sure, but that doesnt disprove F-4S RWR can pick up ARH in its terminal phase.

Only 2, and they are AIM-7E-2’s. Which are quite different from the AIM-7F’s, they turn worse, have much less range, and can still be avoided by rolling unlike the AIM-7F.

An AIM-7F would never fail like you see the AIM-7E-2 dogfight failing here:

I 100% agree. Its still easy to tell if its a ARH or not, the RWR overall is crappy however in my opinion.

When you can only lock planes head on instead of all aspect, I personally have an issue with it. Yes, 7fs are good and better than the E2 but the viggen can fire them from almost every aspect given the right circumstances with the all aspect radar, where with phantoms, its only headon modes. HMD only helps slightly. All a plane has to do with the phantom to dodge a sparrow is to go and notch or turn away since the HDN radar is going to lose lock. And in retrospect, can also slow down really fast since the PD mode is velocity only.

again, its only my opinion on how I see things.

You can switch to normal SRC mode at any time. You just can’t lock into a target that has low speed closure at low altitudes.

If you lock and launch in non PD mode at short ranges, chances are the missile will track anyway even if your radar gets chaffed. As long as the target is still being painted by the radar the missile knows where it is.

That’s the datalink thingy yeah?

No. Normal SRC is the “non pulse doppler” mode, you can lock in any aspect, but the target needs to be free of ground clutter. AIM-7F have no datalink, only the AIM-7P on the premium hornets

I have never used the regular search mode bc of the chance of being chaffed

You’ve posted this clip before, but this literally looks nothing like a sparrow roll. This just looks like the missile failed to track which is a more common issue.

It just outright missed.

The missile didn’t fail to track because it was in TRK mode all the way to the target. It just didn’t manage to react to the pull and roll which is what causes the “sparrow roll” effect.

The 7E-2 normally can’t pull much more than 17G’s

It can fail to track while remaining in track mode the whole time. This is not even unique to sparrows.

Except that looks… nothing like a sparrow roll. The guy just turned and it stopped tracking.

sparrows are notorious for chasing someone completely different than who you’ve locked. Ive seen it chase another enemy and hit that enemy than the one ive targeted.

This is not “failing to track” in the sense that it lost sight of the target.

Could be due to how the missiles are setup to have some delay, or an autopilot track bug. Regardless of what it is, the effect is that these missiles can be avoided by rolling and pulling

It is completely possible for any non-DL missile to track a faster target yeah

This is not what happened here. There was no other target being painted by my radar

Giving it a lower br while stock, sure. But once you get the aim7f it becomes extremely obvious that it makes sense at 12.0

(The 30 teamkills i got bc the sparrow thought it could pull a funny and not listen)

Missile being in TRK mode is not indicative that it is perfectly tracking the plane.

Which is what I said when I say you are confusing defeating a missile kinematically to an actual sparrow roll.

A sparrow roll would be something like this:
