F/A-18 Hornet (Legacy): History, Performance & Discussion

Perhaps, but that one is not anywhere near as good WVR and would rely more heavily on improved ordnances and EW.

Could we not get both? Legacy C variant in the strike aircraft line after the AV-8B+ and the Super E variant after the F-14B? Not sure where that leaves a potential F-14D though.

Tbh i dont know but personally i prefer SuperHornet due to its different design, those new engine intakes looks much cooler than legacy hornet’s intakes :D

It’s the nose that does it for me, so I’m good with either lol

Hi, have you seen General Lee’s video on the Hornet? It left mixed feelings in me.

No, I pretty much don’t watch any war thunder youtubers. It’s a total waste of time for me.

His take on Hornet’s performance is quite different from yours and also his vids are popular and I keep reading as of late that Hornet will be DOA. People compare it to worse Sukhoi because it apparently loses a lot of speed in hard manouvers. It is whatever, just people hatch onto the idea from this vid.

If he says it will be DOA he is wrong, it’s rather simple.
If you consider “not top tier” as DOA, the majority of aircraft in the game were DOA.

Performance aside, I think the main reason Gaijin isn’t adding the F/A-18 this patch is due to the fact it can go to multiple nations at once. That would pretty much require an updated dedicated to just the Hornets, and perhaps a Chinese and Russian counter.

Also add on to that the fact the US has essentially gotten 3 extremely competitive/meta aircraft almost in a row (with some earlier aircraft being made more meta due to more advanced weapons being added), it kinda makes sense to forgo the Hornet for one more update.

I know this is legacy hornet discussion but I would like to point out that not all Super Hornets will be inferior to the F-18C legacy w/ GE-402 engines. The GE-402 engines provided the Legacy Hornets a substantial improvement in flight performance rivaling the F-16 in sustained turns. The Super Hornets also got an improved F414 with enhanced performance that gave them an additional ~20% thrust.

GE proposed the F414 EPE, but it was not adopted and is still under development. Every production F/A-18E/F retains F414-GE-400.

Every production Su-27 retains no dual pylon
Every production Yak-141 has no countermeasures or IRST
No such thing as Japanese F-16

There are about a dozen other examples of why they could add things based on balance over reality. The Su-27SM having dual pylons is a great example because the dual pylons is not even compatible with the airframe but was a proposed upgrade only realized on an entirely different plane (Su-35).

Gaijin could very easily give it the improved engines as a way to enhance the performance of the aircraft and balance it against other gen4’s. That goes for both F-18C and E

Unfortunately no I think not, typhoon will have a better sustained rate easily. And At low speeds I’d need to see some radius data to compare.

Do you see what you replied to or what am I missing here;
