this is in response to an early post here that said USAF F-4E never got 9M
this is a screenshot of 1990 updates to the USAF F-4E flight manual and it clearly lists AIM-9M

because I recently got access to it, here is a screenshot from the 1995 updated manual that also shows 9m
and here is just the 9L/9M without other stuff

are there radar improvements?
I dont think so, the radar itself was never replaced, maybe at some point there were upgrades
but there is very little information about the radar in any version of the flight manual that I have seen
I was wrong, while still technically the same radar, there were apparently significant enough modifications for it to be refereed to as different

IIRC the “improved” APQ-120(V)-10 & -11 introduced the Computer Automatic Acquisition (CAA) mode to the radar, and changed to a Digital Fire Control Computer which refined the calculation (for Later Sparrows and Sidewinders) of the “Launch Acceptability Region” & “Time To Go” for A2A missiles.

Right so I am going to use this here thread to ask some questions.
Or rather, 1 question regarding the F4E Phantom II.

It’s radar is trash. Its maneuverability is mid for 1 turn before it falls from the sky, its speed is mid, its stock missiles are trash, its end game IR missiles are extremely mid, its end game IR missiles are extremely mid, its gun is decent despite not doing any damage at all. Its only redeeming quality is that it can carry a lot of ground ordinance ( which I dont care about since I am an ARB player)
Seriously this thing gets walked by anything and everything. You cannot dogfight anything, nor can you defensive fly in it. The only thing you might reliably hunt and kill are tornadoes, but I could reliably hunt and kill tornadoes on my bicycle using a flyswatter.
What is the point of this thing? What is its intended use? Why must Gaijin give it two aim 9Es? Why are bananas curved
Just push through the stock grind, once you get to the 7E2-DF’s and 9J’s it gets much nicer. You always have to fly with your radar in mind, it can be frustrating to deal with but try to use ACM.
Also, try adjust your radars elevation, make it a bit higher than default so it isn’t looking down at ground clutter as much

Once I get there, what is its intended use? Get smashed by Mig23s in the headon? Get dumpstered by Mig21s/F5s/Mig23s/MirageF1/Viggen/Draken in a dogfight?
I feel like this thing ends up being a missile bus. A huge and fat sparrow delivery system which, once it has expended said munitions, is just useless.
You have to be careful with MiG-23’s, always stay at MP height when engaging them if you can, or do it when they are distracted. With other jets, try to get it done in the first pass or 2, or just use your missiles from farther out
we don’t need new trash F-4Es.
i have played and spaded the Kurnass (basically F-4E with AIM-9G) and it sucks: the radar can’t lock a simple target at 500m except u’re at 3km of it, AIM-7E-2s are really good but since the radar struggles a lot to actually acquire a target, it’s not that good, AIM-9G is situational as any other non-IRCCM missile ingame.
adding a new F-4 would mean:
- copy-paste the old F-4E
- add new tech which should be checked to be sure it actually can carry what u’re asking for irl.
- new BR for a plane that doesn’t deserve it
u already have F-4J with AIM-7F and better radar (idk if Pulse Doppler, which any other 11.3/11.7 plane lacks).
lmao, if you have to ask this you clearly dont know much about the F4E IRL
well it gets walked by Mig23s in every conceivable scenario anyway. So yeah Mig23s definitely warrant care. This thing is utterly helpless in a defensive scenario. There is nothing you can do if the jet on your 6 isnt slower than you ( surprisingly, most things keep up with you no problem at all)
Viggens are faster and turn better, Drakens do too, Mig21s match your speed but turn better, Mig23s dumpster you in every regard, F5’s are slower so you might hope you outrun them, if they catch you low energy you are dead.
That leaves what? The tornado is maybe the only jet that doesnt dumpster you in a straight up fight?
Idk what it is about the F-4E but it plays decently imo. You just have to know your limits and play to have fun. I heard it got removed but apparently nob-Pd radars got buffed on dev server, maybe they will bring it back again later for the update
It definitely isn’t the best plane but I like it
I am compiling a list of things that are more fun than stock grinding this thing.
- putting toothpicks under my toenails and then kicking the wall.
- snorting asbestos.
- dropping 25kg weightlifting plates on my toes.
I could go on.
I do not know how this thing could be regarded as fun, maybe if you actually have missiles that do anything? Who knows? Not me, nor do I intend to find out. I’ll just go back go grinding the US tech tree with the IRIAF Tomcat.
The 7E2 DF’s are quite good missiles for 11.3
The main thing holding it back is it’s gigantic ACM box and awful ground clutter issues. Its FM is not great at all but it’s the best phantom FM in-game apparently. You can go toe to toe with pretty much any F-4 except for the really modernized ones, and if you play smart you can down slower jets like the A-10C and F-5’s
Well I suppose it is the best F4 flight performance wise? I agree it can win. a dogfight vs another F4 but that isnt special because literally anything can win a dogfight against any F4 save for the tornado but that gets a pass because it is an attacker.
I think I am just not going to play this thing anymore than I already have. Trying to deal with viggens or Mig21/23’s is just not fun in a pretty much stock F4.
