F-15EX Dev Discussion Thread

Eglin bird had one for a bit. Don’t know if it still does, LEGION21 is newer.

Neat, will be an acceptable stopgap until LEGION can come as a US F-15/16 exclusive

Can the ex get napalm?

LEGION is same sensor as IRST21, so would be on the RAAF F/A-18F too.

And then hopefully Gaijin manages to make the IRST pod for the F-18 work, since they left it out because they couldn’t get a fuel drop tank + IRST pod in one thing to work lol.

Same sensor but different back end. I think legion is the more capable system

Not enough info publicly available for me to pass any judgement. As far as I’m aware they’re approximately equivalent.

yeah I always presumed it would be capable of carrying the pod IRST just because earlier f15’s could never thought about the sniper pod one neat as long as it doesn’t make you give up countermeasures

It doesn’t. Still not sure why Gaijin even have that limitation any more to be honest.

wonder when EPAWWS will be added properly because we should get more countermeasures i thought and its 360 RWR. yeah it will be fine without but it should have it and it would be nice to have it.

Doesn’t the sniper pod get mounted in the same spot as some of the countermeasures? It at least does in WT.

Peak. You’re welcome? We only wanted the EX to get MAW since the IA had it because both are technically capable of using them. That’s me atleast.

I don’t think ASG-34 has the same link 16 capabilities, and you have to consider that the LEGION is entirely dedicated to cool and process input from the sensor while ASG-34 only gets the front end of a fuel tank

Your welcome 😁

Yeah I didn’t necessarily want it to get removed from the IA, I just wanted it to be added to the EX. If the only choices were that both would have it or neither would have it, I would have chosen both get it.

And there is still a chance. The bug report is still just sitting as accepted, so they might not have come to a final decision yet.

Chaff only behind the tpod. No flares.

Not entirely sure Gaijin know that red is flare and white is chaff 😵‍💫

I’m parroting here. Did you see the arms export control document? AN/ALQ-250 and MAW aren’t listed for export with the F-15IA. See [DEV] F-15IA model wrong, should not have MAWS and EPAWSS source 2, Federal Register / Vol. 90, No. 220. The only images of F15IA we have are 3D renderings in sales pitches. Anything is technically possible, but there’s a level of plausibility that is not acceptable. There is no explicit documentation or imagery that EPAWSS and MAW are on the F-15IA. While possible, there’s nothing explicit.

IRST21 Sensor System | Lockheed Martin

It’s unclear. Whilst they do state Legion Pod, I’ve seen a number of people claiming the IRST21 is just an old name for the Legion pod, albeit unattributed to anyone of importance. Clicking through to “Learn More” gives you this, though:

With a secure, wideband datalink incorporated directly into Legion Pod, immediate connectivity between IRST21 systems is enabled.

With a link back to IRST21 as well. You may be right and this may just be a case of someone at Boeing who doesn’t know the specific details just linking stuff together strangely, but typically manufacturers are better at catching that sort of thing. Unclear enough to say for sure.

Well, my understanding is that IRST21 is the name of the sensor while LEGION is the name of the USAF pod. The designation of the USN one is AN/ASG-34

that was my understanding as well back when i was looking into it for the GE, one day the C GE will get it’s promised legion pod, one.
