The new addition of an icon for external weapons on aircraft, what is the purpose?

So far I could not find any real purpose for having it. I originally thought it will allow me to change my load-out at the airfield on the ground without leaving the aircraft, however, pressing the key-bind only opens a window that shows what is loaded and a white block around the weapon/stores that is selected. In flight it does the same but it also locks out the flight controls. This could be a rare issue if close to the ground or in a dogfight and you accidentally press the button. You can’t even change the selection while the window is open.

Maybe I am missing something, but I don’t have a need for this. I find it distracting and it sometimes block the view of some gauges in the cockpit or when looking around outside. I have got used to it now, but it still bothers me every now and then.

Is it possible to switch it off?

Functionality to both toggle this and turn it off has been added in a recent patch. Check your controls to assign a button to it, I don’t know the default by heart.

Then pressing it shows or hides the symbols (with a small chevron symbol you can use to show/hide with the mouse), or when you hold the button for 2, 3 seconds it hides the symbols completely.

Still wonder what is the purpose though.
