While Germany got suffer with barbette fire, it seems now Great Britain and France needs small range map.
For me personally, I hate conquest and love encounter, but encounter at 5.0+ is too harsh for light cruisers and destroyers. Encounter should be mode for battleships.
yeah you can hit at that distance but its now where near accurate its accuracy by volume at that distance its more luck than actually hitting, accuracy in warthunder is way overtuned your not aiming for magazines at that distance irl your aiming at the ship in general
bismarck started shooting at hood at 14 miles and only started consistantly hitting at way closer distance
Similar in-game mechanics apply in ground battles as they do naval.
Open water boils down to who either has the better ship or gets the magical pixel instant kill.
Cruisers that get uptiered are usually screwed since the distances are too small to effectively get to proper evasion distance since you’re also spawned in sailing towards the enemy. It’s not like ground battles where you can actually move to a sector of the map - It’s everyone on the map is immediately capable of shooting you and no amount of evasive action is going to stop half the team from firing at you.
So yes, cover for naval battles is mandatory for the health of the mode.
Maybe but the only solution is to either rework top tier maps to be well over 30x30km or add cover that ships can actually use.
Or both.
This isn’t so much of a problem in EC where engagement ranges effectively start at 25 to 30 km but being forced to spawn within 14km is a borderline death sentence.
Both is good! Honestly, doing both might actually also fix allowing coastal and bluewater vessels into the same match as well.
And as for server load… well I mean, we’re overdue for engine and model revamp anyway, aren’t we? How old is Dagor? Perhaps it’s something that’s already been in the works in sekrit, but if we were to either revamp Dagor or make a Dagor II with the current game needs in mind, we could patch up a lot of underlying issues at once, and maybe free up server resources for bigger maps and better calculations…
I, for one, am willing to see a pause in new vehicles and features in order to have a Big Patch Bonanza year - it’s not like I’ve run away from a lull before.
Compression is a much more serious problem than map design. For a cruiser, facing a BB on the most carefully designed island map is way worse than facing other cruisers in a simple giant circle.
Depends on the cruiser; a battleship pushing a cruiser behind cover is asking to be torpedo’d while a cruiser pushing a battleship is taking a huge risk of being mag detonated.
Not possible through smoke curtains, open knowledge for naval players.
If they introduce fog, it would definitely hinder any ability to do that, with the exception of searchlights, which would allow for some limited search/lock-on ability through fog.
Darkness would immensely improve aviation experience, searchlights will be used for that too, be sure to avoid them if you’re flying :D
Three more things: It would give radar a reason to be useful in Arcade, and it would could also be used to weaken the AI gunners a bit in particular scenarios. The resulting third thing? It could give coastal vessels the situational buff they need to actually approach the ships and do some damage
