Don't Forget The Older Planes You Have!

Yes P-51D-5 is just about identical to the D-20, and they sure belts iirc so idk what you mean “even weaker armaments from belts”

The P-51D-5 technically has better flight performance than the P-51, but again, the P-51 is far better at lower alts, and the C-10 performs better than the D-5 in all scenarios.

I guess the wiki page comparing them was outdated.

Wiki page said the P-51-D-5 has worse incendiary rounds (early war vs late war) than the P-51-D-20.

Do they not both have full M20 APIT belts?

It does look like their tracer belts are the same. Seems like the wiki, “updated” for sake of removing outdated information, remains outdated.

Love it.

Should make the comparison easier though, given I cannot fly the d-20 being a premium.

Yes, I followed that tip because I forgot about that plane, how wonderful a plane, fast enough to avoid the missiles at that BR if you stay aware. Just a wonderful plane, I went ahead and flew that thing a few times and modified it out, and put it in my lineup. I never had it in the lineup because I was so focused on eventually getting the Mig29. Great plane, STILL.

No doubt that plane is FIRE

Yeah, Im getting burned out on 15km on out airkills, Im enjoying using all the dogfighting skills I acquired.

That is a good point I have not seen on here before, but one I have thought of in an uptier. If you have a plane that can fight well in an uptier, you have a fine plane.

Prelimary observation:

  1. It controls very weirdly with mouse aim. It seems to try to turn with rudder, pitch up and THEN roll. This is probably a skill issue from not having used it in a while.
  2. It controls pretty nice with full-real controls. Does bleed speed in pin-point turns pretty badly, but my sort-of-novice crew slot g-locs at such pretty fast anyhow. It retains enough speed to make 1 gunpass, turn around for a second one and GTFO and not be caught by bf109 Gs that were engaged in a fight already if you start from altitude.
  3. It feels pretty painful in ARB, but that has been my experience even with the F4U-4 which I absolutely love in air sim. Still, I’ll concede that this plane feels far less versatile than the F4U-4 so it gets hurt even worse by having a team of p-47s who load bombs and suicide into ground targets. Feels very off-meta there.
  4. Guns feel pretty nice when firing from ~0.4 km or less against fighters .
  5. Guns feel inadequate for bomber-hunting and you gotta rely on igniting the engine while flying at very fast closure to not die to tail gunners. I’ve had a number of bomber kills that only happened a good 3-4 minutes after I ran away, or died. Same experience as F4U-4, hunting bombers needs cannons or nose guns for long-range bursts.
  6. It shares BR with Ki-84 Ko in air sim. This is less than desirable. In fact, flying lobbies where japan is on the enemy team has been very frustrating given how strictly you need to do BnZ.
  7. It felt alright in lobbies vs germany/italy only even before i spaded it.
  8. Air sim advantages: This thing has an amazing canopy. Can basically see everything all around you
  9. Air sim advantages: Has gyro gunsight to help aiming shots, doesn’t block view

Will stick to her for the rest of the week to see if it just needs breaking in.
I prefer the F4U-4 to it by miles. I stand by that the guns are fine for fighting fighters. She has the same issues as the P-47s for ARB (Strict BnZ that gets really punished by the fast-pace of matches and snowballing). Mouse aim also seems to keep applying far too much rudder in turns. Air sim I’m going to keep giving her a try, her handling & visibility are a lot of fun, match-ups less so.

I cant wait to get a joystick, I am ready to start playing Sim.

Don’t worry, its rudder is famously bad.

Except, P-47 is faster, turns better (somehow), has better armament, and better energy retention.
