Hey guys, I’d like to know how you approach a dogfight situation. Do you slow down and switch to manual controls before making a turn? Do you keep the afterburner on and use the AOA limiter (Cobra button)?
I seem to do fine with the Gripen, Rafale, and F-16C, but I’m currently struggling with the F-15E. If I’m too fast, I can’t make the turn in time, but if I’m too slow, I don’t have enough energy to sustain the turn.
With the F-15E, your close ranged gameplay shouldn’t typically devolve into dogfighting, but when it does, keep this in mind;
Were are your friendlies? You will always have more energy than your opponents if you’re not doing something horribly wrong, so you should be able to take an enemy that overcommits to you into a position where a friendly missile can pick them off.
Joust, avoiding the dogfight with something that has better single turn pull is key, are they a little too high? punish with an AMRAAM, are they not flaring? Great, fire an Aim 9M, preferably with a radar lock to confuse them, even sending a missile that forces them to evade is good, and you get to pick the engagement since you don’t have to turn around.
Speed, the F-15E at close range should be considered a B&Z fighter above all else, if the coast is clear, feel free to just force the turn into a one circle where your engines will do the work for you, avoid things like Scissors or one circle fights unless you know your opponent is too slow to do anything or just a boat.
Pick your engagements, fight on your terms, already stated in point 2, but this is why the Strike Eagle may be the best jet in the game in the hands of a skilled player, you should always pick engagements you want to be in and never commit for the sake of committing, you might have to in a slower jet like a Hornet or Gripen, but you are neither of those now, the enemy should respond to you, not the other way around.
You do though. After a single notch the Su-30SM is well below Mach 1, while the F-15E can cruise along well above Mach 1 after a notch. Also, faster = more energy for your missiles.
