But it is a historical game, so they are allowed to include multiple versions of even just one nation. For example there is only one unified Germany, yet multiple are included.
This could be, usually they are very cautious of legal use.
Personally I’d argue that since pre-1949 PRC uses the national flag despite not being a nation yet, having the ROC flag cannot in good faith be stated to equal a statement about their status as a nation. But I of course don’t know how this holds up to international law.
Then again, as Cpt_Duck said before, this shouldn’t apply to a company based outside of the PRC anyways, especially considering it is a political policy that is not unanimously agreed on internationally.
Maybe it’s not a bug, and rather than displaying player selected techtree flags it displays the operator flags of their selected vehicles. That would actually be very useful to narrow down what vehicles others are using a bit better.
It might be possible to add a regional censor, which would change the flag based on the region a player lives in.
The state it is in right now is as political outside of the People’s Republic of China as it would be for PRC if the flag was included there. So maybe the solution is simply to add it, but based on a players region.
Honestly, I’m very close to just making the bug report about the republic china name change to simply china. It not being mentioned in the changelog makes me think it’s a bug, and we’ve not heard a thing from stona.
I just wonder how that will work in praxis. As to my knowledge Gaijin doesn’t have any servers in mainland China making a restriction through that impossible. Regional censor can be bypassed by a VPN and I have heard that a fair chunk of chinese are using one.
First of all, CN players would check if the English version matches.
Secondly, CN do purchase a lot so despite Gaijin is not a Chinese company, it will still find a way to please them while not affecting much on gameplay mechanics.
Thirdly, the “despite” is not true, in 2019, Gaijin entertainment was nearly incorporated by a Chinese company called GAEA founded in Beijing… showing that Gaijin does have a tendency to form close relationship with CN capitals, thus giving it another reason to avoid adding ROC flags.
Well surely that’s not gaijin’s problem? If you are using a VPN to access content that your country has blocked then surely you have only yourself to blame if use of this VPN allows you access to something you may find objectionable.
True, but also at that point Gaijin would take no legal responsibility. They are following regional law in the respective region, so they can’t be held accountable.
However outside of specific regional law Gaijin need to try being apolitical, which in this case means they can’t pick a side and can only represent historical facts. In this case that means both should exist as options, since the game is available in both regions that recognize only PRC and regions that recognize only ROC.
Also I’d like to add that “one China” cannont be seen as broken by Gaijin, since there will always just be one China (techtree)
This would only allow players to select them on their own, which is a client side only feature. This means any player offended by it is personally responsible for selecting it, while other players can’t share their selection outside of third parts sites to share screenshots, as well as the in game chat that can simply be reported if it gets too political.
In short if the content presented is apolitical and war thunder is used for entertainment the use of a VPN for this game is a non issue. But as you know the whole thing with Taiwan is soo politically charged that even a regional censor is probably too hot for their liking.
