Contraamiral Eustațiu Sebastian (F-264): Aerial Denial
History:
The heritage of the Contraamiral Eustațiu Sebastian-class of corvettes can be traced all the way back to the Soviet Project 1159 Del’fin-class (NATO reporting name: Koni-class). These large and imposing ASW ships were the inspiration for the Romanian Amiral Petre Bărbuneanu-class corvette (NATO reporting name: Tetal I-class), a smaller version of the Koni-class. Entering service in 1983, four would be constructed, with two still in service to this day. While a capable platform, a new design featuring a helipad, a more modern, Western-style hull, and improved hardware would be proposed in the late 1980s, becoming the Contraamiral Eustațiu Sebastian-class (NATO reporting name: Tetal II-class).
These ships were constructed by the Santierul Naval 2 Mai shipyard in Mangalia, Romania, the source of many of Romania’s best naval vessels. Two were laid down, Contraamiral Eustațiu Sebastian (F-264) in 1988 and Contraamiral Horia Macellariu (F-265) in 1991, with two more to follow. However, due to changing priorities and a lack of funding, they were cancelled. Their unfinished hulls now sit in Mangalia harbor, awaiting disposal.
Description:
The Contraamiral Eustațiu Sebastian follows a fairly standard design for a modern ASW corvette. She is a large ship equipped with weapons capable of dealing with most threats she would encounter on a modern naval battlefield. With an all-metal construction, the vessel weighs in at 1504 tons standard, or 1626 tons fully loaded. She measures 93 m (305 ft 1.4 in) long, 11.5 m (37 ft 8.7 in) wide, and 3 m (9 ft 10.1 in) deep. It is powered by four 4000 hp diesel engines, each running its own shaft for a combined 16,000 hp. This produces a top speed of 24 kts (27 mph). A helipad is present at the stern, which could prove interesting if implemented in War Thunder in the future.
When it comes to protection, I couldn’t find anything specific, but it is unlikely that it would have armor beyond the guns themselves.
The Contraamiral Eustațiu Sebastian carries numerous weapons which cover a wide variety of threat types. Its primary weapon is a 76.2mm AK-176 automatic naval gun mounted on the bow. This should be familiar to players of the USSR coastal tree as a capable weapon with HE and HE-VT shells available for use. However, it is unlikely the HE-VT shells will be necessary, as the secondary armament more than covers the anti-air job. This ship is armed with four 30mm AK-630 CIWS turrets placed in a square formation around the central smokestack. Capable of a maximum firerate of over 3,000 rounds per minute and able to bring up to three to bear on any naval target and all four against an aerial threat, these will shred any vehicle foolish enough to approach within 4 km. On top of this, she carries a pair of retractable twin 533mm torpedo launchers, one per side, as well as two RBU-6000 anti-submarine rocket mortars placed just behind the main gun. These are capable of eliminating capital ships with ease, giving Contraamiral Eustațiu Sebastian some serious firepower.
Regarding sensor systems, she mounts the MR-302 “Strut Curve” F-band air and surface search radar. This has a range of 278 km. Additionally, the MR-123 “Bass Tilt” fire control radar is present as part of the AK-630 CIWS system. Sonar for detecting submarines is mounted in the hull.
