Do things like radio altimeters not work in this game?:
The Tornado was designed to fly low precisely because flying at med-high alt was suicide.
It’s perfectly capable of doing so in weather much like this IRL because it has tools we do not have… however taking it in any higher is still suicide because it would just be missile bait.
Then ask for a ground mapping radar, the OP implies that the maps need to be flatter and the clouds removed. None of what you say excuses the behavior in the video. You say that as if flying into a pillar wasn’t certain death. I’d argue it’s easier to evade a missile than to fly into a pillar and survive…so your logic doesn’t check out.
Radio Altimeters point towards the ground not forward.
What is needed is Terrain following radar (TFR)
No sweatie-pie, my logic does check out, you just chose to dismiss it because it doesn’t fit your narrative of “interesting” over “realistic”. Or has the mode been re-branded overnight?
“hug(ging) the ground all the time to avoid radar” is the whole point of aircraft like the Tornado, F-111, Su-24 etc existing. You evade the missile by flying low and not being detected/tracked in the first place, in weather like this technological assistance is required.
The clouds do need to be toned down, they’re ridiculous. Either Snail gives us the tools to deal with these conditions or they don’t make us play in them… simple.
For older aircraft found at lower tiers they just wouldn’t have taken off, they’d be unable able to navigate, find their targets or each other so there would be no point.
First of all, don’t call me “sweety-pie” to diminish me, unless you want this to turn into an insult-fest, by doing that you just come across as pretty arrogant and a bad person.
As for the realism part, tell me what’s realistic about pointing your mouse at a base marker while flying into a cloud without even noticing the pillar in the cloud. It’s a completely oblivious use of a game mechanic.
Again, there’s nothing wrong with wanting ground radar in the game, I actually want it, too. But behavior like in the video isn’t just the game’s fault, that collision was so easily avoidable it almost looks like they did it on purpose. There are plenty of things we have to work around because of missing game mechanics, but that doesn’t mean every map should be flat on a sunny day. You may have a different opinion, but I’m here to say not everyone agrees with it.
I’m actually capable of dealing with the clouds without constantly crashing into pillars and mountains.
You’re right, not every map should be flat on a sunny day. At the same time, it shouldn’t be a wall of clouds from one airfield to the other. It should also be noted that one is actually playable while the other isn’t. It’s like playing a night battle with no night vision and no flares
But do they function or even exist in this game?
Yes - usually in the HUD on equipped aircraft, though some steam gauges exist as well.
