Chieftain Mk 10, Chieftain 900 and T-72M1 Battle Ratings

Oh look, Primary sources that aren’t a random Magazine.

did the chieftain 800 use the L60? As to replace it with a more reliable engine would be good and absolutely massive for the tanks reputation for potential export.

Common flame to have a more reliable engine that can be replaced faster.

Read, Chieftain 800 used a VERY down rated CV12. AKA the Challengers engine. its what lead to the Khalid and such.

it was choked down to 800hp because again, like i said, the Transmission on the Chieftain was getting to its limits with all the extra weight the tank had picked up over its life, and any extra HP was just strain, and didn’t lead to any benefits.

where have you got the idea that the TN12 was the tanks problem from?

It used a down rated CV12

I see you are both choosing to ignore the bit where in 1982 they state the current L60 produces 760 hp…

It was a Transmission designed for a 45 ton tank, thrown in a 50 ton tank, that then had 10 tons of composite armor and NBC Equipment ETC. slapped on it. The Mk10s had transmission issues, Even Hews has had problems out of his Mk10/11s burning up clutches.

Did it say what mark of chief or mark of engine

Could be mk5 chief with the mark 9 engine then sure it’s making 760 or so.

it was a rhetorical question to emphasise my point.

not going to argue with you on it as youre much more knowledgeable than i am

50 year old centrifugal clutches burning out? never heard of such a thing. clearly its bad parts and not that THESE THINGS ARE HALF A CENTURY OLD

Four years after the 840 hp engine supposedly entered service you would expect them to refer to that as the “current L60”, if indeed it existed.

Maybe we’ll just accept that then.

It’s still odd to me that all the people who restore old chiefs say 840 as well.

I found a couple things that mentioned the “Sundance” Program they keep mentioning being canceled, and the Chieftains keeping their 760hp engines till the end, because the British army knew the Challenger was coming, and it would be a waste to upgrade all of their Chieftains right before they were retired. Especially with how TIGHT their budgets were in the late 70s and early 80s.

I’ve not seen that personally, but it could still be the case I guess. I was just trying to tamper expectations as everyone seemed to be treating 840 hp as an open and shut case, when in my mind it is definitely not clear cut. At least with the information currently available.

Next time I’m in the archives I’ll see if I can dig anything up on the SUNDANCE programme.

I’ve seen 840 in various American and Russian sources as well back when I was first looking into it.

I’ll have to dig into it again sadly.

“Russian”

the same Russians who lied about the Performance of L15A3 and L15A5 in reports, leading to Gaijin totally ruining them?
