I know this is a weird question, but has anyone ever tried switching in the midst of something from mouse to sim-controls in a dogfight or something?
I know there are some players out there that change controls mode from mouse to sim to do a Kvochur’s Bell or a Cobra (I have a keybind with my mouse’s side buttons that lets me change control modes fast), but I’ve tried experimenting on props by changing from mouse to sim to do a more smoother dive recovery or a smoother chandelle maneuver, but I’ve never reliably gotten a result where changing control modes to something like a 2-Circle rate fight where I stay around the plane’s best rate speed for maximum turn rate instead of pressing S and hoping my plane is good enough for it.
(Another example, staying between 850-950 IAS Km/h in a Mig-29 vs just holding S)
I did try it on bombers though with something like a B-17E or Me-264, where I switch from mouse to realistic control mode so I could slowly turn and look around. It was smooth and kind of okay.
I do it on occasion, i have F3 set up to switch control mode and F2 to change SAS mode (i cant for the life of me fly a plane without dampening mode on lol). it gives some extra pull for a short burst if needed and way better turn fight control as you can set it to a smooth turn where your pilot doesn’t loose control due to G-LOC. It is however VERY seldom useful for me personally as there isn’t a lot of times i get into a turn fight 1v1 that is also a one circle.
Yeah same, the most I’ve been getting out of quick switching is really the sudden burst. I think I managed like 4 kills with the HMD+R73 Combo of the Su-27, but in props I could barely get to something at all. I do remember this one time when I was chased by 3 JAP planes in my P51-C which had barely any ammo left. I switched to realistic so I could do a slow turn and land to my AF and rearm. I guess this niche doesn’t really have any other use.
Something that you can also use it for is when you have a plane on your tail that you cannot shake, you can activate full real controls and then give it max pitch/yaw/roll (yaw and roll in same direction, pitch; up) all at the same time to effectively flat spin the plane in a horisontal direction. Confuses some players enough for them to miss their shots, not have time to slow down and fly past you. then go back to mouse aim to let the plane auto correct itself so that you can give chase.
I remember being able to get your plane in turn stalls/flat spins just in the mouse-aim mode by itself (and the recovery) – either on purpose, or accidentally if you “over-flew” your plane. But unfortunately they took that away. One of the things I miss.
Can never get the hang of the timing of it, but I did manage to do some reversals in the F-14A Iriaf, I vividly remember going up against an Su-27. I barely had enough fuel left so I couldn’t RTB and had to be conservative with my afterburner. (This was at Golan Heights), and I was fearful that he would shove an ET at me so I hid at the mountains to merge with him since he was going after me. When we were so slow. I did something similar to that, I rolled superhard and got my plane to align to his predicted path and he cobra’ed at me AT the SAME TIME! I almost got him but I overlead and he managed to get me. Was a really fun dogfight.
I didn’t know they had that before, makes sense for props but honestly, as soon as you get up to jets it wouldn’t have been viable to keep as a mechanic in mouse aim mode.
So many times i’ve tried to do it way to early and just instead made myself a massive slow-floating target for the enemy plane XD But when it works it’s glorious. Reminds me of this:
Obviously they had all the time in the world to shoot him down but the confusion got to them. ^^
Unfortunately the key word is “some”. Most players will thank you for making yourself a big, stationary target. Every time I get behind an F-4 I don’t shoot and just wait for it to try the Maverick’s Co-bruh, and if I do miss then I just go vertical because he just got rid of all the energy he’d need to follow me
That’s still possible if you assign keys to yaw/roll/rudder
Ehhh the only real help I’ve had from it is like you said, Kvochur’s bell, landing with tricky-to-land planes, getting slightly more AOA in a stall climb/pulling out etc. Havent found a use for it genuinely dogfighting
Honestly, not worth the hassle of setting it up and learning how to use it properly. It will only matter once in 300 games and even when it does there are probably other ways to get the upper hand without it.
Some planes do get more use out of it though, like the Su-27, Mig-21 or the Draken.
