Actually now that I think of it, if planes were so fragile, why did US navy ships start swapping out 20 and 28mm guns for 40mm BOFORS to stop kamikazes? Could ie be these smaller guns didnt have the necessary punch to break apart these fragile japanese planes before they hit the ship?
for the same reason many nations developed larger AAA guns in 120mm+ calibers even though a 75mm will onetap a B-24 easily

because 20mm was what they had developed and had on hand for upward firing applications, didnt mean they werent shoving 30s and even 50s firing upward when they had the chance
The Mk108 was available in large numbers.
They were doing 20s in almost everything. The few that didn’t were made in single digit numbers and are basically irrelevant.
Even the Ju 388 we have has 20s.

APHE/HE rounds from which countries? Those from Yak-3P are very effective.
I will admit, they’re a tad tanky against generic missile hits, but cannon fire? we’re chillin
Sb-2M, Ar-2, Pe-2, Tu-2, Yak-28B, all of them crashed because a tank fire near fuselage destroyed control lines and gunners.

Now do that against a large 4 engine bomber with 20mms or .50s firing at you. Ofc a Pe-3 is easy to take down, its tiny and every critical component is close together.
