23mm NS-23 is used by 21 vehicles, both China and USSR are forced to use it at one point I can also add.

Only Mk-103 and Type 5 are used because they also come with ballistics and come with a firerate above 400RPM, otherwise they fall under the 37mm M10, M4, NS-37, MK-108 and countless many cannons. Literally not 1 benefit, not even damage.

Comparisons to 30mm are functionally irrelevant due to how rare they are. Even IRL they were used and intended to be used against BOMBERS in order to shoot them from greater ranges and still deliver high weight of fire despite low hitrates at those ranges.

Yes, it’s almost as if this was also the case IRL and only extremely few fighters had 37mm guns. It’s almost as if limiting yourself to just 30 or so rounds of ammo is a bad idea. It’s almost as if 99% of fighter on fighter combat and kills were done with guns of 20mm or smaller caliber…

And still a lot of crashlanded aircraft because the aircraft was in one piece, they simply lost power or saw the aircraft as imposible to fly back so they simply landed in some field

Yes. It is one of very few constants in the BR system. Planes with 4 cannons are always higher than an identical model with less and are often played even more.

Re.2005 (both versions) have a 8mm armored backseat which should easily be able to block fragmentation.

Also said aircraft with 4x 20mm instead of 2x are positioned in better ranks with more rewards, only exception is FW-190 A-4 and A-5, where the outer 20mm are complete ass and simply are better off not existing.
2x 20mils don’t leave much room for more stuff to clean up.

And all this before I try to simulate upsides and downsides for extra filler rounds, which we’ll ignore for now. I’ll take a step back, maybe it becomes too unfair. Maybe we add your customs belts options (I agree with it) but that will only make it more obvious when you load the round with more filler and see no difference.

That doesn’t change plane structures are way too fragile nowadays and a simple hp buff will turn all explosive™ rounds useless because now they will actually need to claw away at a wall, instead of reaching for unprotected important bits.

Leave the structural failure to +25mm cannons, because currently they put you extra restrictions for simply a cosmetic change of “now you the enemy pilot is dead and in a tumbling plane instead of alive and in a tumbling mess”

In-case you wonder this is the difference of mg151/15 hef-t from mg151/20 fi-t.

Fragmentation covers more distance, it’s a little more damaging and that’s it, because both are not very different in TNT equivalent for the most part, but 20mm has a thicker case and thus creates a more powerful fragmentation effect.

You can expect a similar relation between 20mm and 23mm, ofc with more damage.

Dude, the problem is, “setting yourself up correctly” is extremely difficult. It’s like “well, G8N1 is not a death sentence, just set yourself up correctly”, well, setting yourself up correctly is usually impossible as the bomber is going high and going fast and happy to kill you if you try to climb above it.
Time is limited, and you work with what you have. Also most enemies won’t go for energy trap if you have over 1000m separation.

Indeed, it was a weakness. But that didn’t stop aircraft like the Ki-43 from matching favorably against allied types, namely spitfires, in actual combat and coming out ahead many times. Many allied aces were lost to these “weak” fighters and their “weak” armament of two 12.7mm machineguns.

If I get bored playing them, I simply won’t do so very often. If they’re not fun or interesting, I’m just not gonna come back to them at all after spading.

Head-ons are part of the game too. It is perfectly valid to end a fight before it even begins.

Plus if you clip someone with just one wing’s guns, that’s a lot more firepower than if you have one cannon (missed anything important) or two (only one gun’s worth of shells hitting, as I’ve shown in real gameplay it WILL screw you over sometimes).

But I can also mention, 12.7mm can punch some armor doesn’t it? And armor isn’t a onmipresent plate that cover the pilot, shoot on a deflection shot and you may hit the the pilot of even a “super armored” Il-2 or A-26.

In real life pilots opened fire at much closer distances, maybe around 200ish, saw a little “peak” around end of prop combat and then came down as jets took over, that’s still +10mm of penetration

Armor concentrates on the rear because it is the vulnerable area of a plane, If an enemy slips in there armor is meant to help YOUR pilot to peel it off and buy time to atleast bail out without a bullet on it’s stomach.

Your engine is on the front pal + bombers are planned to recieve a health buff + sitting behind a bomber nowadays still is very risky .

You don’t just “shoot” at the bomber, you are supposed to realize "mmmm since I don’t carry anti bomber weaponry I will need to look for stuff like engines, filled fuel tanks (found near the center) to cause fires or make the bomber lose power, But in some cases I can remember my enemy doesn’t have armor and simply strafe the crew dead (with AP)

The P-51B (up until the D series) had an issue where the gear uplock mechanism could fail at high angles of attack, almost always on one side only, with no battle damage.

If you show a tail turning red-ish orange instead of black the point will still stand.

Because the bomber formations were outnumbered at first they didn’t adapt fully yet?(example: the improved frontal armament on B-17s) Only when the numbers started to equalize that 30mm came in and even +50mm weaponry in desperation.

And even then AP will only show a really strong advantage on that case, because a rear attack with any other aircraft that isn’t cursed with god knows what (Japanese 20mm) AP will barely see the spotlight.

Maybe if it is it’s turn to finally come out the barrel and lands into the tail, sees the armor plate of 16mm, punches into it and kills the pilot. Yipee, finally my purpose was fullfilled!

Or we fire 2 explosive rounds in 0.08 seconds and cut the tail off, or even land on top surface of a wing and cut it off. Uh…

Wrong! Sudden catastrophic structural failure. And it’s not even a piece of the skin itself coming off.

Drag does not bring a plane down by itself nor take it out of the fight. Loss of pilot, engine, control, or enough lift will.

Ki-27 has two .30cal guns, and I onetapped an I-16’s wing spar with it the other day. So yes.

Visibility was unchanged until later G models. Armament was unchanged. Engine was upgraded but it was more unreliable and the extra armor added a lot of weight. So it was seen as a downgrade since they now had less performance than on the F models.

F models already had armor, AFAIK galland was more opposed to the reduction in firepower from 109 Es with two cannons

these complaints did not last long and the Ki-43 quickly became a favorite even late war. they did not complain about enclosed cockpit, Ki-27 already had it - in any case pilots made a habit of keeping it open

when you come from fighting in china in super agile Ki-27s, of course a Ki-44 will feel very unfamiliar

But the Ki-43 has very tangible advantages over Ki-27, such as range, speed, armament, protection, and an actual reflector gunsight instead of a WW1-style tube sight. 109 Gs, in their introduction, offered only improved protection while everything else was downgraded.

If A-8 lost it’s outward cannons would you feel a difference? There’s the F-8 but the airspawn isn’t the same, it’s at 5.0 and it has a lot more armor. It is as similar but it won’t do.

We have the antons of 4.0 and 4.3, where one can even mount up to 6x 20mils, but does it really help past 2?

Because it is:

1- found in a pretty relevant line and it is needed to progress
2- Needed to progress
3- It isn’t ass, but the fact the “upside” isn’t very real is still true, I feel like even a Yak-9U is more 5.0 material because it actually outperforms the 3P, I mean it is found at 5.7 as the Yak-9UT.
4- If we use this justification that would mean A6M5s are at home in 5.3 /5.7, since they are common somehow, I suppose an effort to tank the stadistics, I hope it works out.

They had less perfomance in areas where pilots were used to, the gustav’s playground was a little bit higher in altitude.

galland said armament was not really good for average pilots, I mean it is the 500ish RPM one with 60 rounds so it is understandable.

Some E models had armor too, main improvement was extra armor on the fuel tank and simply better layouts

Let’s see from in-game models. (I skip models with no distinct modifications)

E-1: no armor
E-4/E-7/T-2: recieves armor and this aditional and very intrusive headrest armor plate
F-1: removes said headrest armor but extends the backseat armor downwards so it forms a “L”
F-2: Add the headrest back and double down, so it extends above your head now.
F-4: additional thin plate (10mm) to cover fuel tanks + previous armor
g-2: Thicker fuel rear plate (21mm) and now thinner side plates cover the fuel tank (4mm)
g-6 and onwards: replace armored headrest with an armored glass block(60mm) , remains until K-4.

And you can see on all WW2 aircraft families, see how armor slowly thickens and takes more space, if there’s a step back it is corrected inmediatly or simply whatever it protected ceases to exist (I.e Late Ki-61’s radiator armor plate is venishes when Ki-100 steps in, radiator doesn’t exist anymore so the plate is removed).

But I say 109s because they are the most noticeable and more extended family.

Armor really only fades away when missiles start to appear and the whole “cannons are obsolete and not needed” mindset takes over, only exception are dedicated attackers.
And armor past that doesn’t bother to come back. Well maybe because now you are protected by fuel tanks and entire jet engines.

Only half exception are the spitfires where the super enormous back plate was removed and replaced by a more square and smaller one, and the non-seal fuel tank’s armor was shifted from top cover to frontal protection and backwards every once in a while. But past that you see stuff like the ammo behind armor plates. We both saw that video of a 190’s outer cannon ammo be boom boom.

You can see how late Japanese backseat armor is thicker than most nations(around 13mm), those 50. cal may stumble a lot but it is still pretty deadly. Only really beaten by layered armored plates or the tempest (16mm).

Even A6M family recieved armor later on, once range was no longer an issue and engine did look that maybe it can afford to fly similar with some armor on it they went ahead and did it.

Engineers (plural)are not dumb, only “dumb” decision you see are result of 1 dude only and not a team.

But do you really notice that extra armor? Sure stumbling rounds don’t exist in WT, if you add them AP eats a slap for no reason, so that 13mm plate barely does it’s job
Meanwhile if we just take down explosive blast damage it really doesn’t work very well, I showed you how explosive damage will rarely pen then skin and reach a module. I mean imagine you land it next to an unprotected pilot but the 1 fragment that came out missed him and you did a whole flavour of nothing. I said drag is no joke but 1 orange fuselage section is a meh compared x4-5 sections on yellow/orange + leaks, damaged control systems or crew.

Evolve it into similar pattern as 15mm does currently (but stronger), that pilot is dead. (we did agree pilots are too tanky, c’mon you can’t just barely flinch for a 7.5mm bullet to the torso.
You did like 15mm? Well 15mm does make amount of cannons be more relevant, armor a lot more relevant, size (fragmentation has a cap on distance traveled) and so on.

When I used the Fw-189 C (don’t buy it), I did feel that extra 15mm shredding enemies faster and did feel how my opponent’s size (When I shot down a g4m) or armor (Attacked an IL-2 and needed to stick to it’s 6 and hammer it until my AP found it’s pilot) as an extra number to account for.

Uninteded side effect is a general feel of “nerf” because a round to the wing tip won’t just clip it, but shots closer to the generally unarmored center will feel like deadly hits or very crippiling to least make an opponent be no different than a floating ballon.

But I will call it a nerf instead of a rework because in reality it is just that.

That’s the issue, in practice 109 Gs did not offer any of that.

I have zero issues with shooting people down, my issue is when claims are made that they “remove wings in 1 shell/hit/whatever cope wording this time” when that simply isn’t true and I’ve survived getting shot by Shvaks as well.

I been flying Ki-100-II lately. Ho-5s have no issues.

They do it probably 1% of times with that few hits, so yes. Low tiers would be very unfun if damage was “realistic” and the typical 1000rds of .30cal carried in a fighter was barely enough for one or two kills.

Next BR change we will see them going to 6.0 again so they can officially become superprops and superior to Korean War-era F4U-4B!

As I said before, it’s a tradeoff. Is that extra weight in armor gonna get more enemies shot down and more pilots brought safely? Or is putting a huge ballast in your plane just gonna tank its performance and make it just straight up worse?

With 109 G it was the latter.

That armor is pretty insignificant. It is only to protect against shrapnel. A .50cal or any kind of AP from other guns will punch through it.

It was found to be pretty effective, I’ve read a pilot’s testimony that he was personally saved by that armor from a .50cal round, and saw others getting away with it. Postwar testing of Ki-84’s armor also found the same, at most combat ranges it was enough to stop .50cal and buy the pilot a second chance.

We have no feedback on whether the armor works or not. If some P-51 is spraying at you from 1km behind, you dodge a little, and a shot hits and turns the rear fuselage yellow - you think it just clipped an edge or passed through harmlessly, when in reality it might have hit your armor and stopped there.

this is why more cannons matter, the more hits you can get the more you can reduce your chances of getting screwed over

I see it as a buff. I can already hit my enemies easily with most things, having guaranteed area damage is incredibly powerful.

You can see it in-game too, who prefers the g-2 over the F-4?
Only when g-6 comes in you see the scale tilt back.

Entire sections of aircraft are indestructible + 20mm explosive kills by ovepressure(?), where it is a certain radius and it pops the pilot or doesn’t do anything, no in-between.

I flew the Ki-61-II, in those super fast deflection shots (talking both aircraft at 600km/h ish) the ho-5 sometimes let my opponent slip away, compared to a let’s say hispano that simply ended it.

Just seen the I-16’s modules.

1- the spar is a thick as a toothpick
2- it is very fragile compared to most spars, turns deep orange instead of yellow when shot.

Even with backseat armor, lots of early planes just have that, small backseat armor.

You move to the side a little bit and you spot the engine, fuel tanks, radiators and all kinds of stuff. Not to mention when the pilot’s head just pokes from the top of the plate… (J-11 or Mig-3 for example)

Maybe the A-8’s only point is headon attacks, but you can see how F-8’s 2 20mil cannons do the same job in the same amount of time.

Apparently equal to La-9s and better than Yak-3Us, Prayers to Japan TT.

And who spawns shrapnel? (Or at least is supposed to spawn a lot of it).

And mg151/20’s outlier status can recieve fragmentation pattern from 15mm (thin case), but still keep some part of current blast damage

I mean I only really met the dumb type P-51, but the point is valid.
You can add round tumbling which would cut out the distance even lower but I avoided since it would end up as another bat to the knee for AP. Meanwhile explosive just keeps it’s status

Just a few hours ago I roped a friend into flying an IL-2M Type 3 (the highest BR one and presumably the best-protected) in a custom battle for me. I shot at him with the 109 F-2’s 15mm gun. Every time he died with not many hits, even when I purposefully skipped hitting him with the AP-I shell and used only HEF-T to avoid a pilot kill.

The tail, which you said would be very survivable to 15mm HEF-T, shot from directly behind, either resulted in losing all control surfaces (my prediction), control cables cut, or complete loss of stability to overwhelming tail damage. In all cases it took ~10 shells or less. The wing took ~4.

I fired single shots only to make the damage more apparent, but this is a gun firing ~11 shots per second.

So all else aside, I have to disagree with it being a nerf. I’ve been screwed over many times with current damage against planes like IL-2, and this gives a huge degree of certainty that the enemy will be brought down.

And another news, now especially about bomber survivability and here still no message about it
